A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE WAYNE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL WAR EAGLES BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2010-2011 SEASON AND FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Wayne County High School War Eagles Boys Basketball Team finished the 2010-2011 season with an outstanding record of 31-1, ranked No. 3 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10 and demonstrated athletic fortitude and prowess to win the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship; and

     WHEREAS, the War Eagles' 82-74 victory over eight-time state champion powerhouse Lanier Bulldogs placed the team into the records for history and present stardom as the victors of the first boys state basketball title in the school's history, rising triumphantly as the 2010-2011 Class 5A State Champions and adding to the school's three football, two girls basketball and one fast-pitch softball state titles; and

     WHEREAS, throughout their season of play, the War Eagles have faced off with some of the state's best contenders on the hard court, but persevered to make their presence and talent known by embarking upon a 30 consecutive game winning streak; and

     WHEREAS, described as "blue collar, country boys" by their coach Ron Norman, the War Eagles, who outscored their opponents by 938 points, accounting for an average of 29.3125 more points scored per game to reach the big dance of the prep-style culmination of March Madness, have received several individual honors, which are a testament of the team's athletic super-status, including:  the selection of Raeford "Gator" Worsham as Cellular South Player of the Game and Most Valuable Player; and the naming of Detric Davis as recipient of the Cellular South Scholar Athlete Award; the tapping of Raeford "Gator" Worsham and Donte "Tater" Pittman to the All-Tournament Team; and the selection of Raeford "Gator" Worsham and Avery Woodson to the South Squad for the North-South All-Star Game; and

     WHEREAS, members of the War Eagles' nest of champions include:  Donte "Tater" Pittman, Mike Henry, Anthony Wilson, Svante Slater, Cordelius Cooley, Alex Lacey, Raeford "Gator" Worsham, Alphonzo Smith, D.D. Chambers, Avery Woodson, Detric Davis, Cureon Pope, Sylvester Bonner, Daterris Rogers, Emmanuel Davis, Jermall McDonald, Raymel Everett, Lanney McDonald, Curt Rankins, Gary Myers, Samuel Howard, Jarvis Chambers, Demarcus Harris, Karicus Lewis and Chauncey Harris; and managers, Allison Norman and Adora Norman; and

     WHEREAS, the War Eagles have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Ron Norman and Assistant Coach Chris Coleman, who have broadened the War Eagles' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Norman continues to build upon the legacy of superior play and true sportsmanship forged by the tenacious and undaunted spirit of each team member, as evidenced by the team's successful season and for winning its first state boys basketball championship title; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Wayne County High School War Eagles Boys Basketball Team and their coaches, Ron Norman and Chris Coleman, for their outstanding 2010-2011 season, for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Wayne County High School, Head Coach Ron Norman, Assistant Coach Chris Coleman and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
