r    A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED CAREER AND SERVICE OF MR. JESSE R. HUGHES, SR., UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, on March 31, 2016, Mr. Jesse R. Hughes, Sr., enters into the lighter years of retirement after 37 years of distinguished service for Shell Offshore, Incorporated; and

     WHEREAS, a graduate of JZ George High School in 1975, Mr. Hughes furthered his education at Alcorn State University, earning a degree in industrial technology in 1979; and

     WHEREAS, while completing his coursework at Alcorn State University, Mr. Hughes earned a highly coveted summer internship with Shell, which impressed with his diligence, work ethic and drive, Shell offered Mr. Hughes a permanent position upon his graduation from Alcorn State University, and he began his indelible career as laborer; and

     WHEREAS, impressive in every capacity at Shell, Mr. Hughes was promoted from the labor pool not long after he began working, and in 1981 he became a junior operator for one of the field platforms, where he was responsible for a multi-million and ultimately a multi-billion dollar facility; and

     WHEREAS, after several years of incomparable work as a junior operator, his hard work and dedication earned him another promotion to the position of senior platform operator, where he worked for several years before earning the ultimate promotion to the highest position offered at Shell Offshore, the offshore installation manager; and

     WHEREAS, to earn this most esteemed promotion Mr. Hughes had to earn his Ballast Control License, a task he accomplished at the Ballast Control Coast Guard School; upon earning his credentials, he went on to manage a billion dollar operation on the "Brutus," supervising between 100-200 people respectively; and

     WHEREAS, over the course of his 37 year career Mr. Owens has earned countless awards and accolades, his story of unremitting hard work, dedication and his promotion to the highest office at Shell Offshore exemplify the essence of the American dream and serves as a shining example for future generations to come; and

     WHEREAS, a man of strong faith, Mr. Hughes has remained a faithful member of Sycamore Street Church of Christ for more than 33 years, where he served as chairman of the Brothers Committee in addition to serving on a variety of other committees, he also relies on his carpentry skills to maintain the church whenever called upon; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Hughes is also active within his community, he regularly volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and United Way, is a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, helped restore the homes of elderly men and women displaced by the storm; and

     WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Mr. Hughes and his wife of 32 years, Mrs. Phyllis Hughes, have raised three children through their loving union; Jessicah, Jesse Jr., and Jelesia have christened their father "the World's Greatest Dad," who also enjoys spending time with his loving grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize outstanding service and contributions like that of Mr. Jesse R. Hughes, Sr., who has dedicated his life to hard work, demonstrated exceptional leadership and selflessness, and in so doing has brought great honor to his family, his community and the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the distinguished career and service of Mr. Jesse R. Hughes, Sr., upon the auspicious occasion of his retirement and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors as he enjoys the lighter years of retirement.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Jesse R. Hughes, Sr., and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
