A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED CAREER, MERITORIOUS LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICE OF MR. CHARLES JEROME BROWN.
WHEREAS, as an outstanding pillar of his community, Mr. Charles Jerome Brown is truly an inspiration to everyone he has encountered throughout his distinguished career in public service; and
WHEREAS, a Hattiesburg, Mississippi, native, Mr. Brown is a 1958 graduate of L.J. Rowan High School, where he was class president, and he received his bachelor of science degree from William Carey College in 1973, and continued his education at the University of Colorado at Denver, where he received a vocational training degree from the National Veterans Training Institute in 1997; and
WHEREAS, rendering stellar service to his country in the United States Army for 11 years, Mr. Brown served as Sergeant First Class from 1958 until 1969, and was honored with two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars for Valor and numerous other accolades, and in 2017, he was invited to share his story with the United States Office of Personnel Management during their Black History Program in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown diligently worked with the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, now known as the WIN Job Center, from 1973 until 2000, where he served as a vocational counselor and worked in the Veteran's Outreach Program; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown's life of hard work and dedicated service earned him a number of honors and awards, including the Pine Burr Award from the Pine Burr Council Boy Scouts of America; Hattiesburg Professional and Business Men's Club Man of the Year in 1978; Jesse L. Brown Elks Lodge Man of the Year in 1987; City of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Veteran of the Year in 1994; African American Military History Museum Service Award in 2000; Hattiesburg Rotary Club Non-Rotarian of the Year Award in 2011; Dr. John Hope Franklin Award for Community Service in 2012 from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Southwestern Province Polemarch Award in 2013 from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; the HUB Award in 2015; Mississippi Counselor of the Year Award in 1990; and the Mississippi International Association Personnel in Employment Security, Community Service Award in 1988 and 1995, and he was included in the 2012 William Carey University Hall of Fame Class; and
WHEREAS, as a man of exceptional character and extraordinary stature, Mr. Brown's name is engraved in numerous public buildings in the Hattiesburg area, including City Hall, the Hattiesburg Convention Center, Saenger Theater, African American Military History Museum, Hattiesburg Forrest County Library, Petal Library, Kamper Park Zoo, Eureka School, the Brown/Lucas Executive Conference Room at the Lake Terrace Convention Center and the Asbury Hospice House of Forrest General Hospital; and
WHEREAS, as a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Brown is a lifelong member of True Light Missionary Baptist Church, where he has served as deacon, trustee, director of the youth department and Sunday School superintendent for 25 years; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown has used the many aspects of his expertise, wisdom and professional competency to serve as a member of numerous organizations, including the AARP; American Legion; Disabled American Veterans; EUROHA; Forrest General Hospital Foundation; Hattiesburg Arts Council; Hattiesburg Convention Commission; Hattiesburg-Petal, Forrest County Library Trustee; Hattiesburg Public Schools Biracial Advisory Committee; Hattiesburg Economic Task Force Committee; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; Main Street Policy Board; NAACP Forrest County Chapter Executive Board; University of Southern Mississippi Partners for the Arts; R3SM Board of Directors; Salvation Army Advisory Council; South Mississippi Community Action Agency; Veterans of Foreign Wars; and as a Vietnam Lecturer for the University of Southern Mississippi's history department; and
WHEREAS, with his indomitable spirit, Mr. Brown has been a force for good and a positive influence on those around him throughout his life, and with his marvelous courage, he certainly inspires all who know him to strive for excellence each day; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize outstanding Mississippians, especially those such as Mr. Charles Jerome Brown, whose dedication to his faith, his family and to his community brings honor to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Mr. Charles Jerome Brown for his distinguished career, meritorious leadership and incredible service.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Charles Jerome Brown and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
