A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LONG BEACH HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS FOR WINNING THE 2010 CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Long Beach High School Cheerleaders competed in the Class 5A Large Varsity Division at the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) State Cheerleading Competition, and were selected by judges as the 2010 Class 5A State Champions, making it their second consecutive state championship; and

     WHEREAS, this year the Long Beach High School Cheerleaders solidified their rise to championship status by continuing the precedent they established at regional competition to reach the state championship competition, having also won the first-place title at the 2010 Magnolia Cheer Invitational Championship, the NCA Performance Top Team, second-place at the 2009 MHSAA Class 5A Regionals and first-place at the 2009 MHSAA Class 5A State Championship competition; and

     WHEREAS, the roster of the Long Beach High School Cheerleaders is comprised of:  seniors, Becca Bryant, Grace Leiker, JoAnne Peredo and Amanda Seal; juniors, Maggie Clover, Lauren Killgore, Ashley Malley, Whitney Marie, Nancy Miller, Megan Moger, Bethany Taylor and Morgan VonderBruegge; sophomores, Ashley Atwell, Katie DeMetz, Emily Fox, Lauren Kahl, Kristen McLeroy and Tate Weeks; and freshmen, Chelsea Brisolara, Ashlynn Broy, Reagan Ladner, Kayla Peno and Laney Reed; and

     WHEREAS, the recipient of the Spirit Award by attendees at Cheer Camp for being the "role model" squad was the Long Beach Cheerleading Squad along with two standout cheerleaders:  Nancy Miller, who was honored by being chosen for NCA All-American, and Grace Leiker, who was the recipient of the leadership award; and

     WHEREAS, the 23 members of this squad are champions of cheer, they are also champions in other areas of academics and extracurricular activities, as many of its members are representative of honor students, MHSAA scholar athletes, AP and advanced course students, a 2011 Star Student, members of the Student Council, National honor Society, Y Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Student to Student, Frontline, Key Club, theatre, choir, band, LBTV (broadcast journalism) and school annual staff; and

     WHEREAS, the Long Beach High School Cheerleaders have been superbly coached by Coaches Shauna McCormick and Lauren Ward, who have refined their skills in execution, acrobatics and dance; and

     WHEREAS, these young people have practiced and worked together for many hours in the pursuit of excellence and have shown a high degree of sportsmanship while representing the State of Mississippi on the national level; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young people of our state, such as the Long Beach High School Cheerleaders, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Long Beach High School Cheerleaders upon winning the Class 5A State Championship at the MHSAA State Cheerleading Competition and extend sincere wishes for continued success in all of their academic and athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Long Beach High School, Coaches Shauna McCormick and Lauren Ward and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
