 A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MRS. MARTHA SEGARS OF IUKA, MISSISSIPPI, UPON HER SELECTION AS ONE OF THE MISSISSIPPI BUSINESS JOURNAL'S TOP 50 BUSINESS WOMEN FOR 2009.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Martha Segars, an esteemed resident of Iuka, Mississippi, has been recognized by the Mississippi Business Journal as one of Mississippi's Leading Business Women for 2009; and

     WHEREAS, born in Red Bay, Alabama, Martha was reared in Waco, Texas, during the Depression; and

     WHEREAS, her family's move to Texas was a childhood lesson in business after her father lost his employment in Alabama; and 

     WHEREAS, Martha and her husband, Dr. Kelly Segars of Iuka, have three children and five grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, Martha displayed qualities of leadership at an early age and as a young woman attended the University of Alabama and completed a dietetic internship at Vanderbilt University; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Segars began work as a dietary manager and therapeutic dietician at the hospital; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Segars continued working at the hospital until 1988, when she became the local bank's marketing director and administrative assistant, and also served as administrative vice president; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Segars is not only one of Tishomingo County's leading citizens, she is well-known all throughout North Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, she is the longest serving board member on the Tishomingo County Tourism Council, and she won the 2007 Volunteer of the Year Award from the Tishomingo County Development Foundation; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Segars serves on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Authority and on the Tishomingo County Economic Development Authority; and

     WHEREAS, in the past, Mrs. Segars has served on the Yellow Creek Port Board of Directors and the Yellow Creek Water Authority; and

     WHEREAS, she was awarded the statewide Volunteer of the Year honor by Governor Haley Barbour in 2008; and

     WHEREAS, some of her Tishomingo County tourism activities include the Visitor's Guide to Tishomingo County, with a 30,000 distribution, the Fall Foliage Cruise on Pickwick Lake, which is a driving route with the tours consisting of surveying the most beautiful fall foliage colors; and

      WHEREAS, some of her other Tishomingo County tourism activities include professional videos produced to share with the broadcast media in a three-state region and at welcome and visitor centers, and the Trash & Treasures tour along the Tenn-Tom, which consists of a 234-mile, two-state yard sale held along the highways following the route of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway and has been very successful for the past two years in Tennessee and Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, she also helped to promote tourism ads in several magazines, motivating the council to join with other counties in Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee to take advantage of regional marketing efforts for the Natchez Trace Parkway; and

     WHEREAS, she assisted the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance in teaming with other counties to take advantage of regional marketing efforts for the history and heritage of the Northeast Mississippi Region, and helped to establish a Web site with the Tishomingo County Development Foundation that sponsors a virtual tour of the county online; and

     WHEREAS, according to the 2007 Mississippi Development Authority Tourism Impact Report, visitors in Tishomingo County spent $10,096,800.00, an increase of $660,976.00 in one year which was one of the largest percentage increases of any county in Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, in between her busy schedule, Martha enjoys gardening and traveling; and

     WHEREAS, the success of the State of Mississippi, the strength of our communities and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of business women like Mrs. Segars, who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to acknowledge and commend the accomplishments of business and civic leaders such as Mrs. Martha Segars, who have brought growth to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mrs. Martha Segars of Iuka, Mississippi, upon her selection as one of the Mississippi Business Journal's "Leading Business Women for 2009," and extend best wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Segars, to the Tishomingo County Tourism Council and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
