A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MR. WILLIE HARRIS AS PRESIDENT OF THE BLACK STUNTMEN ASSOCIATION.
WHEREAS, the citizens of Holmes County are proud to claim Mr. Willie Harris, who is the President and one of the founding members of the Black Stuntmen's Association, as a native citizen of Holmes County; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Harris comes from a family of sharecroppers in Mississippi, but started out playing professional basketball until a knee injury forced him to give up the sport; and
WHEREAS, after deciding to move his family out to California, he fell on hard times due to unemployment; and
WHEREAS, as fate would have it, Mr. Harris would meet a new friend while performing a favor for an existing friend; and
WHEREAS, on a day that would change his life forever, Mr. Harris gave a friend a ride to Hollywood from Compton, but after dropping the friend off, Mr. Harris was lost and stopped to ask directions, when he happened upon a movie shoot and met famed actor Elliot Gould; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Gould explained the many aspects and roles of those in the movie business, and ultimately helped Mr. Harris get into the union at a cost of $300.00, which Mr. Gould gave to Mr. Harris; and
WHEREAS, as evidence of Mr. Harris' gratefulness to Mr. Gould, Mr. Harris invited him to interview for a documentary about black stuntmen because he wanted to acknowledge the help that Mr. Gould had given him; and
WHEREAS, it is our policy to commend the accomplishments of our native sons, whose superb work ethic set positive examples for our state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we hereby commend the many accomplishments of Mr. Willie Harris as a founding member and President of the Black Stuntmen Association and wish him many years of success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Willie Harris, the Black Stuntmen Association and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
