A RESOLUTION COMMENDING SARAH NELSON FOR HER DEDICATED SERVICE OF VOLUNTEERISM AND UPON BEING HONORED AS THE 2009 VOLUNTEER FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR FOR THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Sarah Nelson, a native of Lexington, Mississippi, who now divides her time between Cashiers, North Carolina, and Jackson, Mississippi, was honored as the 2009 Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year for the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, in receiving this prestigious award, her most recent philanthropic endeavor was emphasized, which is chairing the Development Committee for the Piney Woods Country Life School, a 100-year-old boarding school and working farm south of Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, an exceptional fundraiser, Mrs. Nelson has raised millions of dollars for the program in the 10 years during which she has been involved with the coeducational independent institution that focuses on African-American high school aged youth; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Nelson has for many years combined running a successful business, Sarah Jones Interiors, with numerous philanthropic endeavors, including spearheading annual capital campaigns at her daughters' schools, Jackson Preparatory and St. Andrew's Episcopal Schools; and

     WHEREAS, a tireless worker for good causes, her many other community service contributions include raising money for the Mississippi Arts Festival, the Mississippi Ballet Theater, the Jackson Junior League, the Jackson Symphony Orchestra and the Fondren Renaissance Foundation; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Nelson's love for tennis and the desire to see others come to love the sport led her to help initiate a summer grassroots program for Jackson area children, and also inspired her to assist in the building of local tennis courts for the disabled; and

     WHEREAS, this lovely and gracious community leader is also a wonderful wife to her husband, Phil, and a dedicated mother to her daughters; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend an individual such as Mrs. Sarah Nelson, who dedicates much of her life giving back to her community and to the people of the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Mrs. Sarah Nelson for her dedicated service of volunteerism and upon being honored as the 2009 Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year for the State of Mississippi, and express warmest wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Nelson and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
