A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING MRS. MARY HAIRSTON GLENN UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT FROM THE HEAD START PROGRAM IN COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI, AND COMMENDING HER FOR PROVIDING 49 YEARS OF EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE TO THE STUDENTS IN THE PROGRAM AND THROUGHOUT THE CITY OF COLUMBUS.

     WHEREAS, after 49 years of dedication to the Head Start Program currently managed by the Institute of Community Service, Mrs. Mary Hairston Glenn retired from her position as educator extraordinaire on October 10, 2016, after providing exemplary service to further the education of the children in Columbus, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Glenn's love for her own eight children led her to pursue a career in education, so in 1967, she accepted a teaching position with the Early Childhood Program within the Head Start Program that had been created by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965, and since that time, while she has seen many changes in the management of the program, her dedication to the children and promoting their potential has remained steadfast; and

     WHEREAS, because the devoted and fervent Mrs. Glenn had a neverending thirst for knowledge, she received numerous professional child development accreditations and completed several additional courses of study offered through American College, Mary Holmes College, Mississippi University for Women and Mississippi State University; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Glenn, filled with an eagerness to mold the impressionable minds of the younger generation, played a vital role in equipping the children in her classes with the life lessons and wisdom that would be essential for each of them to reach their potential, fulfill their dreams and achieve greatness; and

     WHEREAS, her dedication to her students and her professionalism as a teacher earned Mrs. Glenn numerous professional certificates and awards, a true testament to the enlightening effect she had on not just her students but the faculty around her; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Glenn helped implement a comprehensive child development approach for hundreds of students in Columbus, Mississippi, and her tenure as an educator gave her the ability to teach third generation offspring of some of her former students; and

     WHEREAS, as a lifelong educator who was filled with an eagerness to mold the minds of the younger generation, Mrs. Glenn's cardinal guidance, devoted leadership and encouraging words were an illuminated beacon of promise to the students, faculty and staff of the Head Start Program in Columbus, Mississippi, as she strenuously strove to ensure that the children entrusted to her tutelage were successful in their academic pursuits and in each facet of their lives moving forward; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend and congratulate outstanding Mississippians such as Mrs. Mary Hairston Glenn, whose superb leadership and instruction for 49 years as an educator in the Head Start Program in Columbus, Mississippi, has equipped the children of Columbus with the knowledge and education they need to successfully embark on their individual journeys, ultimately bettering the lives of the citizens of our great Magnolia State:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby congratulate Mrs. Mary Hairston Glenn upon the occasion of her retirement from the Head Start Program in Columbus, Mississippi, and commend her for providing 49 years of exceptional service to the students in the program and throughout the City of Columbus, and extend most sincere wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Mary Hairston Glenn and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
