A RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING AND COMMENDING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF FRANK CRUMP, JR., MADE DURING THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT.

     WHEREAS, having been born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on May 26, 1927, growing up in the throws of the tumultuous South and often times faced disparate treatment, Frank Crump, Jr., has been a lifelong student and an equal rights advocate; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Crump, who attended the Vicksburg Public Schools enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and completed basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois, ships cook school in Charleston, South Carolina, and aviation mechanic training in Ellison Field, Pensacola, Florida, before receiving an honorable discharge in 1946 as Petty Officer 3rd Class; and

     WHEREAS, upon his return home from his service to the Untied States, Mr. Crump furthered his educational matriculation at Alcorn State University and the University of Southern Mississippi, respectively earning a bachelor of science degree in industrial education and a master of science degree in vocational education administration, after which he engaged in additional studies in architecture at Chicago Technical College and Memphis State University; and

     WHEREAS, an advocate for change and equal opportunity for all, Mr. Crump immersed himself in the Civil Rights Movement and was at the forefront of Black voter registration initiatives as a young math teacher during Freedom Summer 1964 that had been long suppressed by the tenets of Jim Crow laws; and

     WHEREAS, equipped with the knowledge and understanding acquired as a serviceman, college graduate and social activist, Mr. Crump's concern for the plight of the state's educable children ignited a flame to promote the educational growth and attainment in the lives of children throughout the Warren and Hinds Counties' communities as a teacher in what is now the Hinds Community College-Utica campus; and

     WHEREAS, with education at the forefront of his agenda to spur his success, Mr. Crump endeavored to effectuate positive outcomes through his active community service involvement, including:  the Veterans' Club, Industrial Arts Club, YMCA, charter member of Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at Alcorn State University, Omicron Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity of Vicksburg, National Educational Association, past president of Vicksburg Teachers Association, former board member of We Care Community Services, Inc., chairman of the Board of Directors for Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center, NAACP and president of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church music ministry; and

     WHEREAS, with an extensive and reputable work history ranging from buildings grounds clerk at Alcorn, to collegiate instructor and dean, bus driver, postal clerk and licensed building contractor, Mr. Crump's legacy is highlighted by the numerous awards and recognitions he has received, including:  Certificate of Recognition for Military Service during the period of the Cold War (September 1945 - December 1991); Instructor of the Year, presented at the Rosa A. Temple High School Class Reunion of 1980, keynote speaker for the 30th Year Class Reunion for Rosa A. Temple High School Class of 1963, Certificate of Appreciation for significant contribution to National Political Action on behalf of Public Education (NEA-PAC) and Christian Leadership Award through Music by the Pleasant Green Male; and

     WHEREAS, throughout the course of his professional, civic and social involvements, Mr. Crump has been encouraged, supported and inspired by his family, including:  wife, the former Orelia Peterson; their four children, Cecilia, Sharon, Sheila and Frank III; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to acknowledge the unselfish resolve of individuals of Mr. Crump's exceptional caliber, who have committed their time, efforts and resources to improving the future and educational prospective of countless individuals in their communities:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the exemplary, historic and dedicated service of Mr. Frank Crump, Jr., as a civic and social activist and express sincere wishes for continued health and success in the many years to come.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Crump and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
