A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF SHERRI JONES AND COMMENDING HER UPON BEING NAMED RECIPIENT OF THE FANNIE LOU HAMER AWARD BY THE MISSISSIPPI WORKERS CENTER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS.

     WHEREAS, Sherri Jones is a staunch activist and agent for social change in the field of environmental justice, who, through her work with the Forest County Environmental Support Team, has joined with community residents in Hattiesburg to stop chemical companies from poisoning citizens; and

     WHEREAS, through her efforts, the Forest County Environmental Support Team has exposed the illegal and unethical practices of some of the most notorious violators; and

     WHEREAS, these individuals have engaged local, state and federal officials and as a result have heightened awareness about the urgency of the plight of Forest County residents and those residing in neighboring counties, who are victims of environmental abuse; and

     WHEREAS, the Environmental Justice Support Team's work has been cited by other national organizations for its leadership in the field due in large part to the fact that their work has saved lives and provided a model for direct action in the cause of environmental human rights; and

     WHEREAS, the resolve heightens Ms. Jones' commitment to service as she walks in the footsteps of the great Freedom Fighter, Fannie Lou Hamer; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the selfless dedication of an individual of Ms. Jones' tenacity and caliber, who has devoted her time and energy and resources to championing the causes for which she believes:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby, in observance of the Ninth Annual Black History Month Celebration, join the Mississippi Workers Center for Human Rights in recognizing and saluting Sherri Jones for receiving the Fannie Lou Hamer Award, and extend best wishes on this auspicious occasion.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Ms. Jones and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
