House Resolution 28

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2016-2017 OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER TEAM AND HEAD COACH HUNTER CRANE UPON WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 5A GIRLS SOCCER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, people say that lightning never strikes the same place twice, but that adage just isn't true for the Oxford High School Lady Chargers Soccer Team, who clinched victory for the second year in a row against West Harrison in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 5A Soccer Classic at Madison Central High School in Madison, Mississippi, on Saturday, February 4, 2017; and

WHEREAS, in becoming the 2016-2017 MHSAA Class 5A Girls Soccer State Champions, the Lady Chargers, who make it their goal every year to win the state championship, did whatever it took to succeed at the championship level, including investing countless measures of hard work above and beyond the efforts of other teams, and finished their season with an undefeated record of 19 wins; and

WHEREAS, the championship victory would not have been possible without the robust, energetic and driven Chargers defense, who refused to allow a single soccer ball to cross into the sacred territory that is the Chargers goal during their superb championship match; and

WHEREAS, the momentum was on the side of the Chargers from the beginning of the game until the end, as star forward Morgan O'Connor found the opponent's net only six minutes into the game, and to solidify the win, Addison Mills scored on a deflected free kick from right outside the top of the box in the 42nd minute; and

WHEREAS, with a 2-0 lead, the Oxford Lady Chargers ultimately quelled the championship dreams of the West Harrison Lady Hurricanes for the second year in a row, allowing them to end the perfect season with back-to-back state championships; and

WHEREAS, striving to win with unparalleled motivation and ardent determination, the Lady Chargers played their best game of the season during the championship match, as their mental stamina and athletic prowess never wavered from the moment they exited the locker room until the final buzzer signaled victory and they  raised their well-deserved championship trophy under the stadium's twinkling lights as nightfall engulfed Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, the 2016-2017 Lady Chargers Team statistics were impressive, but the key to this team's consistent success has been the constant atmosphere and year round hard work by the following talented and distinguished players:  Captains, Anna Dennis, Bailey O'Connor and Ally Shinall; Catherine Field, Ann Claire Rester, Avery Trealor, Hallie Davis, Emily Hayward, Katelyn Rock, Grace Joyce, Addison Meadows, Ruthie Jenkins, Olivia Rychlak, Morgan O'Connor, Dayton Smith, Kiara McNair, Gigi Yoste, Addie Thompson, Anna Brooke Watts, Maggie Sudduth, Maria Jones, Wesley Warrington, Michelle Reid, Mary Kate Perkins, Anna Abel, Hannah Randall, Nicole Wilkins, Addison Mills, Miriam Reid, Carissa Strum, Mary Anna Fulton and Anna Kate Trost; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Chargers have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Hunter Crane, who has broadened the team's knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, Assistant Coach Macon Humphrees helped the players reach their fullest potential on and off the field and played a huge role in the success of the Oxford High School Girls Soccer Team; and

WHEREAS, in their tireless dedication, the Lady Chargers have developed a winning, cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitudes reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches, bringing honor to Oxford High School; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the superb accomplishments of Mississippi student-athletes, especially those such as the Oxford High School Girls Soccer Team, whose excellence on the field and in the classroom bring honor to their school, their community and the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2016-2017 Oxford High School Girls Soccer Team and Head Coach Hunter Crane upon winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A Girls Soccer State Championship and extend best wishes to the team and coaches for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Hunter Crane and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
