A RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE LIFE, LEGACY AND SERVICE OF DR. THEODORE THOMAS LEWIS AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

     WHEREAS, "To everything there is a season, and time to every purpose under the Heaven," and as such, the mortal presence of dearly beloved, Dr. Theodore Thomas Lewis, at the age of 93, was summoned to rest eternally, rendering great sorrow and loss to his family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, one of the most widely known and beloved public figures in Tallahatchie County, Dr. Lewis, better known as "T.T." or "Chief," practiced family medicine in Charleston, Mississippi, for fifty-three years before retiring from full-time duties in 2009 at the age of 89; and

     WHEREAS, because of his passion for medicine, he continued to dispense medical advice; and

     WHEREAS, he was not only a country doctor, who was once runner-up in a national "Country Doctor of the Year" competition, he was a man of integrity who cared deeply for his patients and fellowman; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Lewis was a World War II Army medic who had been awarded the Bronze Star at the Siege of Bastogne and earned the Purple Heart after being injured in Belgium, he attended medical school following his military service; and

     WHEREAS, he initially came to Charleston in 1951, after a postgraduate internship at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee; and

     WHEREAS, always fair and an advocate for his patients, Dr. Lewis, treated all people of different races the same, even at a time when many physicians segregated their patients; and

     WHEREAS, in Dr. Lewis's transfiguration from mortality to immortality, he has traversed the river of life to reunite with those who answered God's summons to life eternal and now beckon his arrival to the celestial shores of Heaven's grandeur; and

     WHEREAS, it is our policy to honor the life accomplishments and service of magnificent individuals, such as Dr. Lewis, whose compassion was evidenced in his work and service to the citizens of Charleston, Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Theodore Thomas Lewis and express deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Dr. Theodore Thomas Lewis, the Charleston Clinic and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
