House Resolution 21

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE HANCOCK HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS AND THEIR COACH LACEY VITALEC FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION LARGE VARSITY NONTUMBLING STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, December 19, 2015, was a truly historic day for Hancock High School when its cheerleading squad shocked the Mississippi cheer world by winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association State Championship in the Large Varsity NonTumbling Division, a first in the school's history; and

WHEREAS, the day of competition may have been exciting, but cheer championships are not won in December; cheer season begins in February with tryouts, and after receiving strict criteria sheets from judges in July, then cheering through football season, with pep rallies, and basketball season, in addition to the rigorous practice schedule; the championship was birthed at the onset of each performance; and

WHEREAS, an outstanding hard worker, veteran Coach Lacey Vitalec teaches three periods of biology followed by fourth block Cheer with only a 20-minute break all day, before she starts working again with the cheerleaders after school, perfecting their routine and preparing for football and basketball games; and

WHEREAS, during rehearsals, Coach Vitalec never backs down from pushing the girls to the next level, to the point where they dread finishing their routine because they know Coach's next words will be "AGAIN!"; and

WHEREAS, in addition to Coach Vitalec's driving force, the Hancock Hawks Cheerleaders train with Cheer Zone Athletics in Gulfport to develop and polish the complex routine to their maximum capacity; and

WHEREAS, despite the grueling hours of hard work, winning the state title was a complete surprise to all since the team had only one veteran senior, and had consistently placed third in prior competitions, making the big win beyond expectations and creating an extraordinary feeling and atmosphere for the team; and

WHEREAS, having only one senior on the team has its benefits, next year's squad will have an almost entirely identical makeup and the expectations will be even higher; and

WHEREAS, competitive and strong, the girls are focused and ready for the 2016 season having no doubt that they can achieve the state title again; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellent athletes, especially when evidenced by the talented young women of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Hancock High School Hawks Cheerleaders and Head Coach Lacey Vitalec upon winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association State Championship in the Large Varsity NonTumbling Division, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Hancock High School, Head Coach Lacey Vitalec and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
