A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING BRENDA F. MITCHELL UPON HER APPOINTMENT AS DISTRICT ATTORNEY OF THE 11TH CIRCUIT COURT DISTRICT.

     WHEREAS, on January 26, 2010, Governor Haley Barbour announced the appointment of Brenda F. Mitchell as District Attorney of the 11th Circuit Court District; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell has served as interim district attorney since Laurence Y. Mellen resigned the position December 31, 2009; and

     WHEREAS, the 11th Circuit Court District for which she will serve as district attorney includes the following four counties:  Bolivar, Coahoma, Quitman and Tunica Counties; and

     WHEREAS, Governor Barbour noted, "Ms. Mitchell is well-suited for this position with her background as a dedicated public servant in the Mississippi Delta.  She brings extensive criminal legal experience and knowledge to her new role as the top prosecutor."; and

     WHEREAS, she has dutifully served as assistant district attorney since 1995, before which she was a staff attorney for North Mississippi Rural Legal Services in both Cleveland and Clarksdale, Mississippi, and she served as a legal consultant for the Center for Constitutional Rights in Greenville, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Mitchell is a respected member of the Mississippi Prosecutors Association and The Mississippi Bar, and she studied criminal justice at Mississippi Delta Community College, received a bachelor's degree in public administration from the University of Mississippi and earned a law degree from Mississippi College School of Law; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that the House of Representatives recognizes the high esteem for which a respected citizen of this state is held by the Governor, and the honor she has brought to her community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Brenda F. Mitchell upon her appointment by Governor Barbour as District Attorney of the 11th Circuit Court District, and extend best wishes to her in her new position.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Ms. Mitchell and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
