A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MRS. FRANCES WASHINGTON UPON BEING NAMED RECIPIENT OF THE 2010 AARP ANDRUS AWARD FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE.

     WHEREAS, on October 18, 2010, Frances Washington, President of the Mississippi Rural Center of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Chapter #5276, which she single-handedly revived in 2003, was honored with the prestigious Andrus Award for Community Service; and

     WHEREAS, with her pristine people skills, Mrs. Washington motivated the members with fun activities, monthly community service projects, and special activities every holiday, which enabled her to raise the chapter's visibility in the community by collaborating with other organizations on activities, such as visiting local nursing homes, hospitals, schools, children's libraries and participating in parades; and

     WHEREAS, married to Dr. Sonny Washington, Pastor of Mount Pleasant Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Mount Olive, Mississippi, Mrs. Washington is endowed with a Christ-like servant's spirit, blessed with the gift of generosity and selflessness that continually proves itself evident in the outpouring of herself, her resources and her genuine care for others; and

     WHEREAS, a retired educator, holding a master's degree in elementary education, a reading specialist degree, and a doctor of theology degree, Mrs. Washington is the doting mother of two children, who are successful in their own right, a daughter who is a medical doctor in diagnostic radiology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and a son with an accomplished background in public policy and administration; and

     WHEREAS, incessant in her endeavors to be of greater service, and a voice of educational enlightenment, Mrs. Washington serves as a trustee for the Marion-Jefferson Davis Regional Library System Board and serves with the ACLU's Mississippi Prevention of School House to Jail House Coalition; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize the efforts of such a remarkable individual as Mrs. Washington, whose life is representative of the epitome of selfless service that establishes the benchmark excellence by which all of her future endeavors will be measured, as well as serving as a model for others to follow:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mrs. Frances Washington upon being named recipient of the Andrus Award for Community Service and extend best wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Washington and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
