A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING SHEDEUR SANDERS FOR BEING NAMED THE TOP HBCU FOOTBALL PLAYER FOR THE 2022 SEASON.
WHEREAS, Mr. Shedeur Sanders, former Jackson State University Tigers quarterback, received the Deacon Jones Trophy as the Top HBCU Football Player for the 2022 season, a truly outstanding achievement; and
WHEREAS, this distinguished honor is given annually to the best football player at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), and Mr. Sanders surely exhibits the qualities and characteristics that are most attributed to the elite brotherhood of HBCU players that have received this honor in the past; and
WHEREAS, this past season, Mr. Sanders passed for 3,752 yards and rushed for 174 yards in 13 games, and he threw 40 touchdown passes and scored six rushing touchdowns, as the Tigers went 12–1, with their lone loss of the season coming in the Celebration Bowl against North Carolina Central University; and
WHEREAS, with his dazzling play and impressive statistics, Mr. Sanders went on to transfer in the offseason, following his coach and father, Coach Deion Sanders, to the University of Colorado Boulder as a junior; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize exceptional student-athletes, especially those such as Mr. Sanders, whose hard work and dedication brings honor to Jackson State University and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend Mr. Shedeur Sanders upon being named the Top HBCU Football Player for the 2022 season, and extend best wishes for continued success in all his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Shedeur Sanders and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
