House Resolution 157

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE'S WORKS OF MOTHER ANNIE MAE ROBINSON-WASHINGTON AND ACKNOWLEDGING HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MACON COMMUNITY AND NOXUBEE COUNTY AS AN ESTEEMED COMMUNITY PILLAR AND MATRIARCH.

     WHEREAS, for more than nine decades, Mother Annie Mae Robinson-Washington has been an upstanding citizen and community pillar and matriarch in Macon, Mississippi, and throughout Noxubee County, molding and shaping the lives of those privileged to cross paths with the infinite wisdom she has accrued while traversing her own life's highways; and

     WHEREAS, Mother Washington was born on September 8, 1920, in Bigbee Valley, Mississippi, to the proud and loving late parents, Henry and Eliza Robinson, as the fourth of nine children, who survived on their family's modest income in an era when most African-American families raised most of their food, traveled by foot, wagon or buggy; and

     WHEREAS, a pioneer cook of her time, Mother Washington began cooking at an early age and made a career of it in the late 1950's as the head cook at the Johnny's Brown Truck Stop in the City of Macon near the local sale barn on Alt. 45 North before later becoming the main cook at Macon Day Care Center at St. Paul Methodist Church, where she remained in employ until her retirement; and

     WHEREAS, a natural homemaker and caregiver by innate design, she enjoys making all types of quilts, and when the opportunities for African Americans were very limited, she made great strides to encourage her children along with others children to strive for the impossible to make it possible, teaching them to remain humble and respectful to others regardless of race, even when injustices were imposed upon them; and

     WHEREAS, Mother Washington's life's light has been the source of inspiration that encourages many young people to make positive choices, as she has allowed many families to use her vehicle to obtain a driver's permit or license, in addition to providing countless meals for families in bereavement throughout Noxubee County; and

      WHEREAS, a God-fearing Christian before all other roles she assumed, a devoted wife and nurturing mother next, and always the people's advocate, Mrs. Washington, the living embodiment of a woman of Proverbs 31:10 possessing the ambitious spirit akin to that of King David, she is a woman after God's own heart; and

     WHEREAS, one who relied heavily on her faith, Mother Washington confessed her belief in Christ at an early age, and has remained devout in her Christian service and patronage throughout her life, reflecting her passion for God through her commitment to assisting others and her Christ-like care and concern for the building of the kingdom, an allegiance she continues to manifest as a member of Christian Hill Baptist Church for many decades, where she has served in numerous capacities, including:  President of the Missionary Society, Secretary of the Mission, the Usher Board and Senior choir;

     WHEREAS, in the late 1970s Mrs. Washington joined the coalition of activists who fought for the integration of schools by placing one of her children in the Noxubee County School for whites; and

     WHEREAS, some of her active work in the community involved serving as the Secretary of the NAACP, assisting in voter registration, working as a Poll Watcher for many years, and she continues her role as an impassioned advocate of education of young people achieving their goals with the help of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor and commend the life and works of such a remarkable individual as Mother Washington, whose caliber exceeds the greatest riches ever to be paid for the extent of her service, her humility and willingness to extend benevolence and impart a word of wisdom to all:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life's works and contributions of Mother Annie Mae Robinson-Washington, acknowledge her for the Macon Community and Noxubee County as an esteemed community pillar and matriarch, and extend our most sincere wishes for continued health, joy, happiness and success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mother Annie Mae Robinson-Washington and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
