A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING DR. BARBARA CHILDERS MCMILLIN UPON BEING NAMED THE EIGHTH PRESIDENT OF BLUE MOUNTAIN COLLEGE.
WHEREAS, the Blue Mountain Community rejoiced when news spread that a native daughter of the community, Dr. Barbara Childers McMillin, would return as the new President of Blue Mountain College and officially take office on August 1, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Dr. McMillin will be the eighth president of the college; and
WHEREAS, Dr. McMillin grew up 15 miles north of Blue Mountain in Falkner, Mississippi, and is an alumna of Northeast Mississippi Community College, Union University and the University of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, she serves as the current Associate Provost and Dean of Instruction at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, where she has been a member of the faculty for the past 20 years; and
WHEREAS, after earning a bachelor of arts degree in English from Union, she earned both her master of arts and doctor of arts in English at the University of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, she began her career in Mississippi, as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Mississippi and an English Instructor at Blue Mountain College in the summers of 1985 and 1987; and
WHEREAS, eager and committed early in her career, she was a member of the Northeast Mississippi Community College English faculty for five years before joining the Union University faculty in the fall of 1992 and being named Union's Faculty of the Year in 1999; and
WHEREAS, a woman of great faith, she is a lifelong Southern Baptist who is lovingly supported by her husband, Larry, and one son, Sam; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of those who were nurtured in this great state, explored and conquered territory in other states, but returned home to educate and advance the educational opportunities of our youth, who are the state's future:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Dr. Barbara Childers McMillin upon being named the eighth President of Blue Mountain College.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Barbara Childers McMillin and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
