House Resolution 154

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE INSTITUTE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF MINORITY HEALTH FOR ITS COMMITMENT TO REDUCING HEALTH DISPARITIES WITHIN DISADVANTAGED AND MINORITY COMMUNITIES IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, since 2019, the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health, through its development and implementation of public health programs, has educated the public, policymakers, and public health professionals about issues important to improving the public's health; and

WHEREAS, with a vision to improve health outcomes in vulnerable, underserved, disadvantaged minority communities in Mississippi, the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health strives to decrease the pervasive implications of growing regional gaps, which have reduced the life expectancy rates in southern states by two to four years when compared to northern states; and

WHEREAS, these health disparities, which the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health strives to eradicate, are fueled by social, economic and behavioral factors such as lower levels of education, higher rates of tobacco use, obesity and less social mobility; and

WHEREAS, the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health has implemented public health programs to improve the social determinants of health that directly influence health outcomes for disadvantaged and minority communities; and

WHEREAS, the Institute has mobilized its resources to provide disadvantaged, minority communities with personal protective equipment and vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic; and

WHEREAS, the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health has mobilized its resources to provide water to disadvantaged and minority communities who were without water during the Jackson Water Crisis; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to acknowledge the unwavering commitment of such organizations as the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health, which has devoted countless resources to improve healthcare outcomes in the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health for its commitment to reducing health disparities within disadvantaged and minority communities in the State of Mississippi, and extend best wishes for continued success in all its future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Institute for the Advancement of Minority Health and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
