A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE SERVICE OF LARRY GREGORY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE MISSISSIPPI GAMING COMMISSION, FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS, TIRELESS DEVOTION AND SERVICE TO THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM PUBLIC SERVICE.

     WHEREAS, Larry Gregory has faithfully served in various capacities of public service to the citizens of the State of Mississippi for many years, and it is with appreciation that we recognize his dedication and devotion upon his retirement; and

     WHEREAS, a native of Jackson, Mississippi, Mr. Gregory served four years in the United States Air Force and attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he received a bachelor of science degree in political science before continuing his education at Mississippi State University, receiving a master of public policy and administration, and he further received a certificate of paralegal studies from Mississippi College; and

     WHEREAS, during his time at the Mississippi Gaming Commission, he helped to regulate a $2.8 billion industry, managing a staff of 145 individuals who serve to regulate the industry within the state; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Gregory has succeeded in instituting a strict, but fair, regulatory approach within the industry, modeling the state's free market approach of regulation after the model employed by the State of Nevada; and

     WHEREAS, as a guest commentator and speaker to numerous media outlets, forums, conferences and civic clubs, he has attributed the success of the gaming industry within the state to solid regulation and a sound business approach; and

     WHEREAS, most recently, in the wake of devastating Hurricane Katrina, which Mr. Gregory cites as the source of his biggest challenge as executive director, he helped move forward recovery and reconstruction efforts for the state's gaming industries, drafting regulations to direct rebuilding along the Mississippi Gulf Coast; and

     WHEREAS, he has been supported in his endeavors by his wife, Mollie, and they live in Jackson, Mississippi, where they are faithful members of Trinity Presbyterian Church; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor diligent state employees and elected officials, such as Larry Gregory, whose career serves as an example to all citizens of the State of Mississippi and whose legacy of service is exemplified by initiative, fairness and good judgment:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the remarkable career of Larry Gregory, express how his leadership will be missed, congratulate him upon his retirement, express deepest appreciation to him for the hard work and many sacrifices he has made to serve the people of the state and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Gregory and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
