House Resolution 14
(As Adopted by House)
A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING FEBRUARY 14, 2026, AS CONGENITAL HEART DEFECT AWARENESS DAY.
WHEREAS, Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) are the most common type of birth defect, affecting approximately 1 in every 100 babies born; and
WHEREAS, CHDs are structural problems with the heart that are present at birth, and these defects can range in severity from mild to life-threatening and can affect the heart's chambers, valves, or blood vessels, and while the exact cause of many CHDs is unknown, several risk factors have been identified, including:
family history, genetic conditions, maternal health, and environmental exposures; and
WHEREAS, early diagnosis and treatment are essential for improving outcomes and quality of life, and many children and adults with CHDs require lifelong care, including surgeries, medications and ongoing monitoring, and raising awareness helps to ensure that these individuals receive the support and resources they need to thrive, and it also fosters a greater understanding within our communities, reducing stigma and promoting inclusion; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and bring awareness to important health matters that affect many Mississippians, especially those such as congenital heart defects, celebrate the strength of those living with them, and raise awareness about the importance of early detection and ongoing care:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby designate February 14, 2026 as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
