A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE SACRED HEART CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ALPHA MOCK TRIAL TEAM FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT AND WISHING THEM SUCCESS IN THE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Hattiesburg sent two Mock Trial teams to compete in the Mississippi High School Mock Trial Championship Tournament in Jackson on March 1-2, 2013, and after much spirited competition in the earlier rounds, the Alpha Team advanced to the finals where they defeated Long Beach High School to claim the State Championship; and

     WHEREAS, as a result of their outstanding victory in the State Championship, the Alpha Team will travel to Indianapolis on May 7-12, 2013, to represent Mississippi in the National High School Mock Trial Championship; and

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi High School Mock Trial Competition is an educational program that has been sponsored and directed by the Young Lawyers Division of the Mississippi Bar since 1983, and it includes regional and state-level competitions; and

     WHEREAS, mock trials are designed to give students an inside perspective of the legal system, providing them with an understanding of the mechanism through which society chooses to resolve many of its disputes; and

     WHEREAS, students involved with a competitive mock trial team benefit from improved critical thinking and communication skills and learn the importance of quality preparation, teamwork and following rules, and the experience they gain, through oral advocacy and networking with other students, teachers, attorneys and judges will stand them in good stead throughout their lives, regardless of their chosen career path; and

     WHEREAS, Sacred Heart's Alpha Team is composed of the following students:  Nina Bellipanni, Zachary Bermond, Julianna Calabrese, Matt Gladden, Mason Hinton, Michael Jordan, Albert Nabiullin and Savannah Steadman, and the Omega Team, which placed fifth among all teams participating in the State Championship, includes the following students:  Carter Andrews, Maria Enger, Dylan Fink, Spencer Gibbs, Catherine McClain, Sarah McClain, Christina Rutland, Christian Shiyou and Jack Wilkins; and

     WHEREAS, during the awards ceremony, several members of each team won the following honors:  Mason Hinton received four Best Witness citations; Matt Gladden, Maria Enger and Catherine McClain each received two Best Witness citations; Dylan Fink received six Best Attorney citations; Albert Nabiullin received four Best Attorney citations; Nina Bellipanni received three Best Attorney citations; Christina Rutland received two Best Attorney citations; and Michael Jordan received one Best Attorney citation; and

     WHEREAS, Sacred Heart's Mock Trial Teams have been well coached and inspired by Paul VanZandt and attorneys Don Hinton, Carey Varnado, Katherine Howie and Sarah Snow; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend such a superb group of students as Sacred Heart Catholic High School's Mock Trial teams, who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we commend and congratulate the Sacred Heart Catholic High School Alpha Mock Trial Team for winning the Mississippi High School Mock Trial Championship Tournament, and we extend our best wishes for success in the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Indianapolis and for continued success in all their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Sacred Heart Catholic High School, Coach Paul VanZandt and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
