MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2026 Regular Session

House Resolution 136

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING TRAPPING AS AN EFFECTIVE WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT TOOL.

WHEREAS, regulated trapping is a proven, science-based wildlife management tool that supports conservation goals, protects vulnerable species, enhances habitat and waterfowl production, reduces taxpayer costs for nuisance control, aids in disease control, generates economic benefits through fur harvesting, and prevents costly environmental damage, all while being restricted to abundant species under strict regulatory oversight by state and federal agencies; and

WHEREAS, through targeted predator management, trapping significantly enhances waterfowl production in high-density breeding areas where it reduces predation on duck eggs by species such as raccoons and skunks, boosting nest success rates from as low as 5-10% to the 15-20% threshold needed for stable populations, ultimately increasing duck numbers by tens of thousands and restoring natural breeding potential; and

WHEREAS, trapping provides essential benefits including disease control, economic value through fur harvesting, prevention of costly damage like beaver-induced flooding, and effective population regulation of overabundant species to prevent habitat degradation supporting native wildlife recovery:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and celebrate regulated trapping as an essential, humane and effective component of modern wildlife management and conservation in the State of Mississippi.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the State of Mississippi encourages education and outreach efforts to inform the public about the role of regulated trapping in balanced wildlife management and sustainable resource use.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and the offices of Congressmen Trent Kelly, Bennie G. Thompson, Michael Guest and Mike Ezell and United States Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith, and made available to local and regional media sources and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
