House Resolution 131

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JANSEN JIBRIL YOUNG ON BEING AWARDED A SCHOLARSHIP TO PLAY FOOTBALL AT ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY.

WHEREAS, Jansen Jibril Young, a six-foot, two-inch, 310-pound senior at Forest Hill High School in Jackson, Mississippi, recently sealed his recruitment to play collegiate football by signing a letter of intent to play at Alcorn State University in the fall of 2011; and

WHEREAS, a versatile athlete who has excelled on both the offense and defense, Jansen, who began playing football at the young age of eight, most often plays left or right tackle or nose guard; and

WHEREAS, while having a love and appreciation of the game of football which exceeds that held by most of his peers, Jansen is a well-rounded young man with diverse interests, including a love of music that he deepened by playing tuba in the school band; and

WHEREAS, when not on the football field, studying the plays in the latest college or pro game or throwing the ball with his friends, Jansen, an avid billiards player, often may be found with a cue stick in hand at a pool table, sharpening his skills at pocketing as many pool balls as he can; and

WHEREAS, in addition to managing his school work and athletic training, along with many activities off the football field, Jansen has worked with the United States Department of Agriculture's Student Temporary Employment Program, or "STEP," in the field of catfish genetics for the past three years; and

WHEREAS, Jansen, who has an extraordinary love and affection for animals, particularly his three dogs, has gained valuable experience through his work with the USDA and plans to major in Agricultural Science when he starts his collegiate career at Alcorn this fall; and

WHEREAS, a devout 18-year-old with a strong faith, Jansen is a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church in Leland, Mississippi, where he serves on the Church Youth Board, and a member of the Youth NAACP organization; and

WHEREAS, the son of proud parents, Luvenia Adams, an Alcorn alumna more anxious than ever to cheer for the Braves, and Benjamin Young, Sr., the congenial Jansen, although strong and healthy in stature, has a big heart and gentle spirit that draws others to be around him; and

WHEREAS, having been a fixture at the State Capitol since his mother became employed with the Mississippi House of Representatives when he was seven months old, Jansen has loyally served as a page for the House since he was 12 years old; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to bring special recognition to those achieving excellence, and only fitting that we applaud Jansen Jibril Young, a young man we proudly claim as one of our own, as he prepares to embark on the next phase of his academic and football career:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Jansen Jibril Young on his being awarded a scholarship to play football at Alcorn State University and extend heartiest wishes for continued success during his collegiate years and beyond, both on the field and in all of his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Jansen Jibril Young, Forest Hill High School and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
