A RESOLUTION COMMENDING REPRESENTATIVE GREG WARD FOR HIS LEGISLATIVE LEGACY AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE MISSISSIPPI HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

     WHEREAS, Representative Greg Ward, an honored and cherished member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, will make 2011 his last legislative year when he retires; and

     WHEREAS, the Honorable Greg Ward began his legislative service in 1999 after edging out several opponent-candidates upon being elected by the citizens of District 4, which is composed of parts of Benton, Tippah and Union Counties, and was sworn into office on January 4, 2000, at the commencement of the 2000 Regular Session of the Mississippi Legislature; and

     WHEREAS, he has utilized the wisdom and experience he has accrued over the years to guide him in his duties as Chairman of  the House Agriculture Committee and as a member of the Appropriations, County Affairs, Education, PEER, Public Property and Transportation Committees; and

     WHEREAS, born April 19, 1950, in Ripley, Mississippi, Representative Greg Ward, driven by the value instilled in him by his parents, graduated from Ripley High School and attended Northeast Community College and Mississippi State University before beginning his own business enterprise as owner and proprietor of Quality Glass; and

     WHEREAS, during his tenure as Chairman of Agriculture, he has developed a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable people in that area and is considered a champion for agriculture and forestry as our state's greatest natural resources and economic interest; and

     WHEREAS, like all champions, he has been honored for his efforts by many organizations, including the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation for his continued support of agriculture with its distinguished "Friend of Agriculture" award on multiple occasions, for promoting and guiding successful legislation, including:  the Mississippi Catfish Marketing "Country of Origin Labeling" Law, the Boll Weevil Management Act, disaster relief for Mississippi's sweet potatoes farmers and issues beneficial to the Emerging Crops Program; and

     WHEREAS, throughout the years, Representative Ward has utilized his leadership skills in the community as a former member of the Tippah County Development Foundation, the National Federation of Independent Business and the National Association of Home Builders, in addition to his management and operation of his business; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ward is a strong man of faith who is an active member of the Church of Christ, who has been supported in every endeavor embarked upon by his family:  wife, Judy Ormon Ward; children, Stephanie, Stacie and Kelly; and his grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor one of our own, who has represented his district, as well as this legislative body, with honor and dignity:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Representative Greg Ward for his legislative legacy and congratulate him upon the occasion of his retirement from the Mississippi House of Representatives.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative Greg Ward and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
