A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MADELYN SLOAN BERRY UPON BEING NAMED THE UNITED STATES WINNER OF THE ROYAL COMMONWEALTH ESSAY COMPETITION.

     WHEREAS, Madelyn Sloan Berry, "Sloan," a student at Northwest Rankin Middle School, was recently named the United States winner of the Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition, which afforded her the opportunity to travel to London, England, and have an audience with Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall; and

     WHEREAS, the Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition is the largest and oldest competition in the world with the organization itself celebrating its 150th anniversary in October 2018, and this year's theme built on the 2018 theme of "Towards a Common Future" and focused on sustainability, safety, prosperity and fairness and asked writers to address global challenges and work to create a better future for all citizens; and

     WHEREAS, Sloan, who entered the contest thinking "Why not?," was one of 30,000 to 50,000 applicants from around the world and the only student chosen to represent the United States, and she was truly in awe when she met members of the royal family, especially Camilla, who is someone she will remember forever; and

     WHEREAS, the daughter of Chris and Jennifer Berry and the younger sister of Carter Berry, Sloan is in the eighth grade at Northwest Rankin and plays on the middle school volleyball team and the junior varsity tennis team, and she is currently the first chair flute in the school's band; and

     WHEREAS, additionally, Sloan plays the violin, attends Pinelake Church, serves as Vice President of the Junior Beta Club, and is a member of the Academic Team and the 23 and Up Club; and

     WHEREAS, Sloan credits the Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition with opening her eyes and reminding her to pay more attention to what is happening on a global scale, and she now strives each day to help make a change for the better, as even the most simple decisions can help shape the world and make a better tomorrow; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend exceptional Mississippi students, especially those such as Madelyn Sloan Berry, whose award-winning prose and brilliant ideas will not only bring about positive change for the citizens of her community and this state, but also bring honor and glory to her family, Northwest Rankin Middle School and to the State of Mississippi: 

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Madelyn Sloan Berry upon being named the United States winner of the Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition and extend sincere wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Madelyn Sloan Berry and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
