A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE CALLAWAY HIGH SCHOOL CHARGERS BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH DAVID SANDERS FOR WINNING THEIR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE MHSAA CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, on March 13, 2015, the Callaway High School Chargers Boys Basketball Team defeated the Ridgeland Titans in a blowout 66-43 win to claim the Mississippi High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class 5A Boys State Championship in front of an estimated crowd of 6,800; and
WHEREAS, this championship win marked the Chargers' fourth consecutive state championship and their sixth in the last seven years; and
WHEREAS, even though the Titans led three times in the first half, they could not wrestle the championship away from the Chargers, who are ranked number four in the USA Today High School Sports Super 25; and
WHEREAS, Malik Newman, one of the nation's top-ranked seniors, led the Chargers in scoring with 27 points and six assists and was joined by Dimencio Vaughn and Wesley Harris as the only Callaway players to score double digits; and
WHEREAS, the Chargers ended the season with a nearly perfect record of 31 wins and only two losses, making Head Coach David Sanders' record over the last two years an impressive 62-4 with two state championship titles; and
WHEREAS, although there were several standout performances, this championship win was a result of teamwork and unselfish play, with every teammate understanding his role and executing it perfectly; and
WHEREAS, the 2014-2015 Chargers Boys Basketball Team roster is: Marcus Summerville, Tanorrio Ransburgh, Decardo Day, Kassim Nicholson, Jamal Bolden, Quay Kennard, Malik Newman, Dimencio Vaughn, Damien Moore, Wesley Harris, Javious Bardney, Jvari Thigpen and Head Coach David Sanders; and
WHEREAS, the Chargers have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual player and their coaches and bring honor to Callaway High School; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Callaway High School Chargers Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach David Sanders upon an outstanding 2014-2015 season and for winning their fourth consecutive Mississippi High School Athletic Association Class 5A State Championship, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Callaway High School, Head Coach David Sanders and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
