House Resolution 109

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE VICKSBURG LOCAL BRANCH 94 OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LETTER CARRIERS (NALC) UPON ITS OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY AND TO DESIGNATE MAY 13, 2017, AS LETTER CARRIERS' STAMP OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE DAY.

WHEREAS, the Vicksburg Local Branch 94 of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), which is known for supporting the community it serves, is participating in the milestone 25th anniversary of the NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which is being held on May 13, 2017; and

WHEREAS, this laudable cause of providing food for those in need is the outgrowth of a tradition of community service demonstrated by members of the NALC, which has been in existence for over 125 years; and

WHEREAS, this incredible effort to assist those in need began in October 1991 when a pilot food drive was held through the  coordinated efforts of the NALC, the United States Postal Service (USPS) and the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO); and

WHEREAS, due to the success of the first food drive, where letter carriers do double duty by delivering the mail and picking up food donations, the NALC, USPS and AFL-CIO worked together to make the drive a nationwide effort; and

WHEREAS, a revamped drive was organized for the second Saturday in May 1993 with a goal of at least one NALC local branch participating in each of the 50 states and as a result, over 11 million pounds of food were collected across this great country; and

WHEREAS, notably, over the years, the amount of food collected by the NALC has increased tremendously, with over 80 million pounds collected in 2016 and with an impressive cumulative total of 1.5 billion pounds of food collected since the inception of the drive; and

WHEREAS, the Vicksburg Local Branch 94 of the NALC, whose officers are Renee Maxey, who serves as president; Tommy Atlas, vice-president; Victor Killian, secretary; and John Conerly, treasurer, is a fine example of how letter carriers work to make a difference in the lives of those they selflessly serve; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize all letter carriers, including those in the Vicksburg Branch 94 of the NALC, whose collected efforts to assist their communities serves as a role model for all:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby designate May 13, 2017, as Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day, and we wish Vicksburg Branch 94 of the NALC continued success in all of their efforts.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Vicksburg Local Branch 94 of the National Association of Letter Carriers and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
