House Resolution 105

A RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMEMORATING THE LIFE OF MR. SUTTER LEVON OWENS UPON HIS PASSING.

     WHEREAS, on Thursday, February 4, 2016, Mr. Sutter Levon Owens left our physical world to join in the promise of everlasting salvation with the author of our magnificent universe; and

     WHEREAS, born in Crystal Springs, Mississippi, on January 26, 1958, Mr. Owens spent his formative years in Terry, Mississippi, before graduating from Terry High School, where he met the true love of his life, Ms. Pearlie Brown, of Utica, Mississippi, enthralled with her beauty and grace, the two consecrated their love at the wedding alter on May 14, 1978, to exchange the sacred vows of eternal love and sow the seeds of a loving family; and

     WHEREAS, born with a keen interest in the outdoors and livestock, Mr. Owens sought out higher education at Alcorn State University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in animal science; and

     WHEREAS, exceedingly kind and wise, Mr. Owens achieved success in many endeavors throughout his life, as the proud owner of S. Levon Owens Cattle and Land Development, LLC, and the co-owner of Chapman & Owens Investment, LLC, and the development of 15 subdivisions in Hinds County, Mississippi, one of his most treasured accomplishments; and

     WHEREAS, an accomplished civic leader, Mr. Owens was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Mississippi Farm Service Agency State Committee, where his many years of experience and rich knowledge served the State of Mississippi well; and

     WHEREAS, an exceptional leader in his community, Mr. Owens's influence reached far and wide, his passion for politics coupled with his knowledge and experience served many men and women who pursued elected office; and

     WHEREAS, a man of strong faith, Mr. Owens belonged to Little Bethel C.M.E. Church, where he served his fellow church members as a Trustee; and

     WHEREAS, though Mr. Owens has now transcended our mortal world, his memory still warms the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and those left to cherish the many wonderful memories include:  his loving wife of 37 years, Mrs. Pearlie Brown Owens; four daughters, Mrs. April Miley, Mrs. Tiffany White, Mrs. Kia Lewis and Ms. Brooke Owens; brothers, Mr. Jody Owens and Mr. Bob Owens; sisters, Mrs. Dianna Faye Watson, Mrs. Jasmine Rena Chapman, Mrs. Gwendolyn Cummings and Mrs. Darline Slater; along with many nephews, nieces, grandchildren and a host of business associates and friends; and 

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize the lives of outstanding individuals like Mr. Owens, whose life brought immeasurable joy to those who knew him, additionally his many contributions to our state made his community and the State of Mississippi a better place to live:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commemorate the life and legacy of Mr. Sutter Levon Owens, and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends upon his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Sutter Levon Owens and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
