House Resolution 104
(As Adopted by House)
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE FOREST HIGH SCHOOL BEARCATS BOYS SOCCER TEAM FOR WINNING ITS FIRST MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION NORTH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, on February 4, 2014, the dynamic Forest High School Bearcats Boys Soccer Team completed an outstanding 2013-2014 season by capturing the school's first ever Mississippi High School Activities Association North State Championship; and
WHEREAS, after defeating Philadelphia 3-1 in the first round of the 3/2/1A bracket's state playoffs and South Pontotoc 4-1 on the road in the second round, the Bearcats defeated Southeast Lauderdale High School by a score of 2-1 in a nail-biting penalty shootout at the away playoff game before succumbing to St. Patrick Catholic High in their first State Championship game; and
WHEREAS, during their season, the Bearcats, a perfect 4-0 in the district, outscored district opponents 26-0 and recorded 7 shutouts; and
WHEREAS, claiming Forest High's fourth straight district title in boys soccer, the Bearcats scored 76 goals, had 49 assists and allowed 30 goals to finish the season with a remarkable record of 14 wins and 6 losses, all of which were to playoff teams, including state champions Jackson Prep and St. Patrick; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the school's first North State Championship in boys soccer, the Bearcats achieved many firsts for the team during the 2013-2014 season, including defeating 5A Neshoba Central for the school's first ever win against a 5A school and defeating 6A Forest Hill for the school's first ever win against a 6A school; and
WHEREAS, while all the members of the Bearcats soccer team worked together to achieve success on the field, another honor for Forest High School was, for the first time in school history, the naming of a player, Aaron Gutierrez, as a North All Star for the Mississippi Association of Coaches All Star Game, during which Aaron scored the school's first ever goal in an All Star Game; and
WHEREAS, the Bearcats, superbly coached by Head Coach Trey Butts in his first soccer season at Forest High School, have developed a winning, cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitudes reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches, bringing great honor to Forest High School; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our great state, who are its future:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Forest High School Bearcats Boys Soccer Team for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association North State Championship and extend best wishes to the team's coaches and individual players for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Trey Butts, Forest High School Principal Kim Shoemaker, Forest Municipal School District and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
