A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING ATTICUS AND SILAS NELSON FROM DESOTO CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL FOR WINNING THE 2015 MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION STATE PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, through hard work, research and dedication, brothers Atticus Nelson and Silas Nelson, who represent Desoto Central High School, earned a victory in the 2015 Mississippi High School Activities Association State Public Forum Debate Championship; and
WHEREAS, on their path to winning the MHSAA State Championship, Atticus and Silas Nelson won the district tournament hosted at Madison Central High School, beating 33 other teams and earning their place in the state championship competition; and
WHEREAS, the Public Forum Debate is an event that was created by the National Forensics League at the start of the 2002 debate season and requires each team to argue around a resolution, which may be a proposition of policy, value or fact, and usually deals closely with ongoing current events; and
WHEREAS, Atticus Nelson further distinguished himself by winning first place in the Impromptu Speaking Competition and being picked as one of five Mississippi students to compete at the 2015 USA World Schools Debate Invitational Competition in Dallas, Texas; and
WHEREAS, by winning the state championship, Atticus Nelson and Silas Nelson have demonstrated a keen ability to research an issue and present their argument in a logical and persuasive manner, and there is no doubt that these skills they have mastered will stay with them throughout their lives and will one day be used for the betterment of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the achievements of Atticus and Silas in the state championship are indicative of the DeSoto County School District's speech and debate program as a whole, showing that even though the program is only five years old, it can produce champions; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and honor the achievements of students such as Silas and Atticus Nelson, who have brought great honor to their school, community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Silas Nelson and Atticus Nelson upon winning the 2015 Mississippi High School Activities Association State Public Forum Debate Championship, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Atticus Nelson and Silas Nelson and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
