House Concurrent Resolution 96

(As Adopted by House and Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LAFAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL LADY COMMODORES BASKETBALL TEAM UPON WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 4A STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Lafayette High School Lady Commodores Basketball Team reigns supreme after finishing the 2017 season with an impressive record of 30 wins and 3 losses, and capturing the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A State Basketball Championship on March 9, 2017, at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, this was truly a dream season, a dream that has been in the making for 35 years as the unparalleled determination and year-round hard work helped catapult the Lady 'Dores to their first state championship since 1982, a game in which they defeated Ripley High School 55-45 for the third time this season to raise the "Gold Ball" Trophy high into the air in a jubilant celebration of immense accomplishment and deserved success; and

WHEREAS, the 'Dores controlled the first quarter, grabbing a commanding 17-8 lead after the first eight minutes, but Ripley refused to go quietly into the night and used a lopsided foul margin - Lafayette had 10 fouls to Ripley's two late in the first half - as well as outscoring the Commodores 15-12 to narrow the deficit, making it a six-point Lafayette lead at halftime; and

WHEREAS, senior Shaniyah Buford, who had dreamed of winning a state championship in basketball since the eighth grade, was named the game's Most Valuable Player after she scored a game-high 24 points and recovered four rebounds in her final basketball game outfitted in the Commodore red and gold, and she credits her team for pushing her and challenging her every day in practice to help her achieve this goal; and

WHEREAS, the win would not have been possible without sophomore Mariah Holland, who scored 13 points to join Buford as the only two Commodores in double figures, and freshman Azariah Buford assisted in the win with an additional four points; and

WHEREAS, basked in a flurry of red and gold, the fans provided glowing support to the Lafayette Girls Basketball Team during the regular season and the playoffs, rallying behind their beloved Commodores each night and filling the stands with their spirit and encouraging chants; and

WHEREAS, the Lafayette High School Lady Commodores Basketball Team has been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Shayne Linzy, who has broadened their knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, Coach Linzy continues to build upon the legacy of superior play and true sportsmanship forged by the tenacious and undaunted spirit of each team member, as evidenced in his ability to produce high caliber players and plays and by the team's successful season; and

WHEREAS, the members of this team will carry the unforgettable memories they made along their way to championship status, whether it was the long hours in the weight room or the grueling practices, and the lessons of hard work, dedication and perseverance learned during this amazing season throughout their lives as they are constantly flooded with the feeling of greatness that accompanies being a champion; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, such as that displayed by the Lady Commodores Basketball Team, and it is with great pride that we congratulate this group of student athletes and Head Coach Shayne Linzy, who have brought honor to their school, their community and to this great Magnolia State:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Lafayette High School Lady Commodores Basketball Team upon winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A State Basketball Championship, and extend best wishes to the team and coach for continued success in all of their future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Lafayette High School, Head Coach Shayne Linzy and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
