A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DEDICATED, DILIGENT AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICE OF DR. BRUCE D. LEOPOLD TO THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI AND TO MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, Bruce D. Leopold, Sharp Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology, Executive Director of the Center for Resolving Human-Wildlife Conflicts and professor and former head of the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture at Mississippi State University, recently announced his retirement to be effective on June 30, 2015; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Leopold, a fellow and former president of The Wildlife Society and a Professional Member of the Boone and Crockett Club, received his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona after receiving his master of science in forestry with a minor in wildlife management from Mississippi State University in 1979; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Leopold has made momentous contributions to the educational arena in wildlife ecology and wildlife management, not only in Mississippi, but throughout the United States, with over 28 years of service to the State of Mississippi and Mississippi State University; and

     WHEREAS, having served a long, distinguished and successful career, Dr. Leopold is known by his colleagues and students to be intelligent, hard working, loyal, friendly and concerned about the quality of education for all students of Mississippi State University and the quality of wildlife for all citizens of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, having his name become synonymous with that of wildlife conservation, Dr. Leopold's tenure has seen substantial growth in status within the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture, as well as a growth in size, enrollment and faculty of Mississippi State University; and

     WHEREAS, the support and insight that Dr. Leopold emanated over the course of his educational and administrative career at Mississippi State University is indicative of his commitment to ensuring that Mississippi State University fulfills its mission to serve the citizens of the State of Mississippi and the United States by providing educational courses as well as community services to meet the diverse needs of the population at a reasonable cost; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to honor individuals such as Dr. Leopold whose contributions have done so much for wildlife conservation not only in the State of Mississippi but throughout the United States, and whose personal and professional life dedicated to bettering our natural environment for future generations may serve as a model for all citizens in our beautiful state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Dr. Bruce D. Leopold, Sharp Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology, Executive Director of the Center for Resolving Human-Wildlife Conflicts and professor and former head of the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture at Mississippi State University for more than 28 years of outstanding service to the State of Mississippi and Mississippi State University and extend to him and his family best wishes in the lighter days of his retirement.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Bruce D. Leopold and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
