MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2016 Regular Session

House Concurrent Resolution 92

(As Adopted by House and Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE UNPARALLELED ATHLETIC CAREER AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF BRETT FAVRE AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON HIS ELECTION INTO THE PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME'S CLASS OF 2016.

WHEREAS, one of the greatest football players of all time from Mississippi, Brett Favre, was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2016 on February 6, 2016, joining a host of other legends and solidifying his name in the history books; and

WHEREAS, as this Legislature predicted in 2008, Favre was indeed a first-ballot Hall of Famer, as the three-time league MVP was elected as a Hall of Fame member in just his first year of eligibility; and

WHEREAS, in order to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a candidate is carefully scrutinized and must receive 80 percent approval of the Selection Committee at the annual meeting before he can be elected, and the fact that Favre met this is a testament to the respect he commands by those deeply involved in the sport of football; and

WHEREAS, Favre, a 20-year veteran of the National Football League (NFL) who spent the majority of his career with the Green Bay Packers, started as quarterback for the University of Southern Mississippi for four years before being drafted in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons; and

WHEREAS, Favre retired as the NFL's all-time leader in completions (6,300), attempts (10,169), yards (71,838) and passing touchdowns (508), and has only been surpassed by Peyton Manning in career passing yards and touchdown passes since his retirement; and

WHEREAS, the Hall of Fame has previously recognized Favre for his record of most consecutive career starts by a quarterback and there is even a section of the Pro Football Hall of Fame website devoted to the one individual who the Hall of Fame calls the "Iron Man"; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his other honors, Favre holds the distinction of being the only quarterback to have led a team to victory over all 32 teams in the league since the NFL first expanded to 32 teams in 2002; and

WHEREAS, even though Favre's on the field performances brought pride to this state, he has also helped Mississippi off the field through his charitable works and took an active lead in helping the coastal counties recover after Hurricane Katrina's incomparable destruction; and

WHEREAS, only a select few individuals are honored with their selection into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Brett Favre is such a deserving individual, whose name and legacy will forever be remembered in the hearts of all Mississippians; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend the outstanding professional athletes who call the State of Mississippi home, and whose achievements on and off the field bring honor to the citizens of this state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THERE IN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Brett Favre upon his election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2016 and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Brett Favre and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
