A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE BOONEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL LADY BLUE DEVILS GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH MICHAEL SMITH FOR WINNING ITS FIRST MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN PROGRAM HISTORY.

WHEREAS, Dashiyah Agnew scored a game-high 20 points, and the Booneville High School Lady Blue Devils Girls Basketball Team won its first State Championship in program history despite an abrupt coaching change in October and a late rally on March 14, 2014, to hold off Belmont 56-51 in the MHSAA Class 3A Girls Basketball State Championship at the Mississippi Coliseum; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach Michael Smith did not expect to make an appearance in Jackson this season, much less with the girls team, but that changed in October when the former coach stepped down from his position and in came Michael Smith, the boys basketball coach who led the Blue Devils to a MHSAA Class 3A Boys Basketball State Championship in 2011 and runner-up finishes the last two years; and

WHEREAS, Booneville (28-6) smothered Belmont in the first quarter, racing out to a nine-point lead before grabbing a 34-23 cushion by halftime, and when the Lady Cardinals rallied back, the Blue Devils responded with a 10-2 run, five of which came from Agnew, to seal the victory, and Young posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Blue Devils and Maleeka Patterson almost had one of her own after recording 9 points and 10 rebounds; and

WHEREAS, the 2013-2014 Lady Blue Devils Girls Basketball Team Roster is: Adallice Young, Kabrina Hill, Dashiyah Agnew, Zoe Anglin, Lexie Michael, Kristen Perrigo, Maria Lauderdale, Shmia Williams, Kaylee Stephenson, Maleeka Patterson, Ali Martin, Madison Davis, A.J. Jackson, Dee Friar and Cora Geno; and Head Coach Michael Smith; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize such an outstanding group of student athletes and their dedicated coach who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Booneville High School Lady Blue Devils Girls Basketball Team and Head Coach Michael Smith for winning its first Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 3A State Championship in program history, and extend best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Michael Smith, Booneville Principal Terry King, the Booneville School District Board of Trustees and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
