House Concurrent Resolution 81

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING COACH DOYLE WOLVERTON OF LEAKE ACADEMY UPON BECOMING THE THIRD WINNINGEST GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH IN THE NATION.

     WHEREAS, Coach Doyle Wolverton of Leake Academy High School is being recognized and honored upon becoming the third winningest girls basketball coach in the nation with a 36-year record of 1,153 exceptional wins; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Wolverton's and the Rebelettes' historic and celebrated victory took place on Friday, January 21, 2011, at Leake Academy where Simpson Academy was soundly defeated by the Rebelettes with a final score of 66-29; and

     WHEREAS, a native of Union, Mississippi, Coach Wolverton, after completing high school and knowing the importance of continuing his education, graduated from East Central Junior College and earned a bachelor of science degree in athletic administration and coaching from the University of Southern Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Wolverton, who truly has a zeal for coaching and has only 175 losses in his entire career, has spent his total 36-year coaching career at Leake Academy, speaking volumes for his allegiance and dedication; and

     WHEREAS, during his dynamic coaching career at Leake Academy, Coach Wolverton has amassed the following:  5 State Overall Championships, 13 State Championships, 13 South or North Championships and 24 District Championships; and

     WHEREAS, through Coach Wolverton's guidance and leadership, the Rebelettes have advanced to the overall state tournament 22 times and the varsity girls also advanced to the state tournament 32 times, and in 1998-1999 the Rebelettes had a perfect 46-0 record; and

     WHEREAS, the junior high girls at Leake Academy, who are under the leadership of Coach Wolverton, accumulated 631 wins and only 59 losses over a 36-year period, that includes 23 District Championships, and this year's junior high girls (2010-2011) have recorded a perfect 29-0 season, the most wins ever by any Leake Academy junior high team, and his junior high teams compiled an impressive 108-0 record during 2002-2007; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to being the winningest coach of all time in this state, Coach Wolverton has been named Coach of the Year 24 times, an All-Star Coach and in 1998-1999 was named Coach of the Year for the State of Mississippi for public as well as private schools; and

     WHEREAS, for over 36 years the Rebelettes have been superbly coached and inspired by Coach Wovlerton who has broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

      WHEREAS, throughout all of his coaching successes, Coach Wolverton has been lovingly supported by his beautiful wife, Linda, and their successful son, Drew; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence that is exhibited by a positive role model such as Coach Wolverton, who encompasses a winning spirit, positive attitude and tireless devotion to the athletic endeavors of young people:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Coach Doyle Wolverton upon being the third winningest girls basketball coach in the nation and extend best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Wolverton, Leake Academy and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
