A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING REVEREND DR. HICKMAN M. JOHNSON ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 50TH ANNIVERSARY AS PASTOR OF FARISH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH.

     WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Hickman M. Johnson, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, began his ministerial service to the Ecclesiastical order of the living gospel 50 years ago under the biblical principles and precepts of the Baptist Church and has exceptionally served Farish Street Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, for the past 50 years as pastor; and

     WHEREAS, with several decades of spiritual excellence due his honor, Dr. Johnson has provided a level of religious leadership to his previous and present congregations in a variety of capacities that serve as an example to the entire citizenry of the State of Mississippi, of what is best in the human spirit when rooted and grounded in insurmountable belief and faith in God; and

     WHEREAS, a graduate of Tennessee State University, Dr. Johnson received his master of divinity from Morehouse School of Religion--Interdenominational Theological Center and his doctor of ministry from Emory University; and

     WHEREAS, heeding God's calling to share his passion for the unadulterated Word of God, Dr. Johnson labored in the vineyards of service as Chaplain of Tougaloo College for one year before assuming his current station of the cross at Farish Street Baptist Church in August 1968; and

     WHEREAS, like David's, Dr. Johnson's ministry seeks the very heart of God, as his apostle's duties and affiliations have included service as the director of the Jackson Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), a nonprofit community-based jobs training program; Regional Director of the Atlanta region of OICs of America; Dean of Academic Affairs for Mississippi Baptist Seminary; Interim Executive Director of the Jackson and Tupelo Housing Authorities; Executive Director of the Jackson and Tupelo Housing Authorities; and Executive Director of the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority No. VI; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson is also extremely active in numerous church and community organizations having served as Chairman of the Mississippi Religious Leadership Conference (MRLC) and the MRLC Disaster Task Force; Co-Chairman of Change in the Form of Government Committee, a blue ribbon citizens' committee appointed by the mayor to recommend changes in Jackson's commission form of government; Chairman and member of the Seminole District Committee, Boy Scouts of America; Member of the Executive Board of the Andrew Jackson Council, Boy Scouts of America; Member of the Southern Ecumenical Council on Maternal and Infant Health of the Southern Governors' Association; Moderator of the Jackson District Missionary Baptist Association, Inc.; Corresponding Secretary of the General Baptist State Convention of Mississippi; Member of the Theological Commission, National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.; Commissioner of the City of Jackson Housing Authority; Chairman of the City of Jackson Housing Authority Board of Commissioners; and

     WHEREAS, additionally, Dr. Johnson is the Administrator of the Ministries' Divisions and Faculty Member of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education and a member of the Board of Directors of the General Baptist State Convention of Mississippi, the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO), the Public Housing Authorities Directors' Association, the Southeastern Regional, Housing and Redevelopment Officials, Phi Delta Kappa Professional Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, and Beta Gamma Boule, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity; and 

     WHEREAS, always poised to be positioned to help those most in need, Dr. Johnson has been recognized for his heroic efforts and service to the church and community through honorary degrees from Natchez College Doctor of Divinity and Mississippi Baptist Seminary Doctor of Divinity, and he received the Mississippi Religious Leadership Conference's Distinguished Religious Leaders' Award, the 1990 Boy Scouts of America District Award of Merit, New Horizon Church International, 2008 Community Servant Award, and the 2012 Fannie Lou Hamer Humanitarian Award, presented by the Hamer Institute, Jackson State University; and  

     WHEREAS, men of faith such as Dr. Johnson are rare in these times of social and moral decline in America but nevertheless serve to uphold everything righteous about a country that has its very founding premised upon spiritual foundation in God as the sovereign Deity; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize such outstanding godly leaders as Reverend Dr. Hickman M. Johnson, who has dedicated his long and distinguished career to bringing many souls to know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Reverend Dr. Hickman M. Johnson on the occasion of his 50th anniversary as Pastor of Farish Street Baptist Church and extend heartiest wishes for God's continuous blessings and success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. Hickman M. Johnson and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
