A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING DR. TIMOTHY ALFORD UPON BEING ONE OF FIVE U.S. MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS INVITED TO CARRY THE OLYMPIC TORCH FOR THE 2010 WINTER GAMES AND COMMENDING DR. AND MRS. ALFORD UPON BEING NAMED KING AND QUEEN OF THE JUNIOR AUXILIARY DENIM AND DIAMONDS CHARITY EVENT.
WHEREAS, Dr. Timothy Alford, born in Greenwood, Mississippi, and a longtime resident of Kosciusko, Mississippi, was one of five U.S. medical professionals invited to carry the Olympic torch for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; and
WHEREAS, "I was overwhelmed and humbled by the whole notion of carrying the flame, but it wasn't until I got there and actually got into the relay that it all sort of hit me," stated Dr. Alford, after carrying the torch three-tenths of a mile on January 19, 2010, in the small Canadian town of Strathmore; and
WHEREAS, the American Academy of Family Physicians nominated him for participation as a torch bearer due to his commitment to physical fitness, his contributions to his community and his conscientious approach to the environment; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Alford's numerous good works include helping to establish a Rural Health Scholars Program, to encourage high school and college students to consider a career as a primary care physician and working as a member of his local school board to mandate physical education and revise nutritional standards in Mississippi's public schools, and Dr. Alford was recently voted president-elect of the Mississippi State Medical Association; and
WHEREAS, Dr. and Mrs. Timothy Alford, both outstanding members of their local community, served as King and Queen for the Junior Auxiliary Denim and Diamonds Charity Event held February 13, 2010, at the Attala County Coliseum; and
WHEREAS, Dr. and Mrs. Alford have raised three outstanding children: Timothy Alford, Leah Mabry Hendrix and John Paul Alford; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend those individuals, such as Dr. and Mrs. Alford, who bring great pride to their adopted community and the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Dr. Timothy Alford upon being one of five U.S. medical professionals invited to carry the Olympic torch for the 2010 Winter Games and commend Dr. and Mrs. Alford upon being named King and Queen of the Junior Auxiliary Denim and Diamonds charity event, and we express our sincere wish for continued success in all of their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. and Mrs. Alford and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
