A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2016 ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY LADY BRAVES TENNIS TEAM, HEAD COACH ANTHONY DODGEN AND GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH KERTSEN VANEM FOR WINNING THE 2016 SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE WOMEN'S TENNIS TOURNAMENT.
WHEREAS, Alcorn's Women's Tennis team defeated the Jackson State University Tigers 4-2 to claim the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Tennis Tournament on Saturday, April 17, 2016, at City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans, Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the Alcorn State University tennis program is a diverse program comprised of young men and women from all over the world who are welcomed to Alcorn State University to further their athletic and academic training; and
WHEREAS, the university recruits players that are interested in good academics as well as playing tennis and conform to the university's policy of graduating student-athletes in four years; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Braves Women's Tennis Team plays a very competitive fall and spring schedule with many ranked teams and is comprised of Bianca Birkenstock, Maddie Breckenrigg, Klavdija Bukovec, Daria Chemodinova, Marlene Maier, Natalia Parchowska, Aakanksha Punj, Veronika Pytlikova and Anastasia Vaganova; and
WHEREAS, the team is superbly coached by Head Coach Anthony Dodgen and Graduate Assistant Coach Kersten Vanem who broaden the players' knowledge of the game and refine their skills in execution; and
WHEREAS, Marlene Maier received the tournament's Most Valuable Player Award and Head Coach Anthony Dodgen was named 2016 Coach of the Year; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Braves proudly and valiantly represented the State of Mississippi and the SWAC against the Auburn University Lady Tigers in the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Championship Regional in Auburn, Alabama; and
WHEREAS, since 2000, the program has achieved the following honors: 2000 Women's SWAC Champions and NCAA regional participant, 2001 Women's SWAC Champions and NCAA regional participant, 2008 Women's SWAC Champions and NCAA regional participant, and 2016 Women's SWAC Champions and NCAA regional participant; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Braves have a proven record of excellence which reflects their winning and cooperative spirit as well as an excellent academic record of achievement; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially as evidenced by the high caliber of athletic and academic achievement of the Alcorn State University Lady Braves Tennis Team:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2016 Alcorn State University Lady Braves Tennis Team, Head Coach Anthony Dodgen and Graduate Assistant Coach Kertsen Vanem for winning the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament and express deepest wishes for continued success in their future.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Alcorn State University, Head Coach Anthony Dodgen, Graduate Assistant Coach Kertsen Vanem and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
