A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE SOUTHEASTERN REGION OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED, FOR THE NEW ADMINISTRATION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW PROGRAM INITIATIVES UNDER THE THEME "GLOBAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH TIMELESS SERVICE."

     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, by 16 members, with Ethel Hedgeman Lyle as the visionary founder; and

     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority grew from one undergraduate group of 16 members to an international organization with more than 250,000 members in over 950 chapters throughout the United States and across six countries; and

     WHEREAS, the 28th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Attorney Carolyn House Stewart, implements the legacy of service through her program "Global Leadership Through Timeless Service" which emphasizes the following initiatives:  Emerging Young Leaders; Health - asthma prevention and management, environmental sustainability; global poverty; economic security; social justice and human rights; and internal leadership training for external service; and

     WHEREAS, International Program Chairman, Attorney Sharon F. Bridges, a resident and local chapter member of Jackson, Mississippi, issued the call to global service to all chapters throughout the nation reminding chapter members that implementing the program initiatives will enrich mankind and transform lives around the globe through members' commitment to a legacy of supreme service; and

     WHEREAS, these program initiatives in Alpha Kappa Alpha's second century of service meet the heightened need of our youth and promote their personal success; and

     WHEREAS, the Southeastern Region is led by Adrienne P.K. Washington, the newly elected Southeastern Regional Director, a resident of Huntsville, Alabama, who serves the Region with distinction in conjunction with the presidents of the 104 chapters in the region with 32 of these chapters being located in Mississippi and two chapters in Jackson, Mississippi, led by two newly installed presidents, Dr. Glenda Glover, the former International Treasurer and WJTV anchor, Erin Pickens; and

     WHEREAS, the new administration also promotes Alpha Kappa Alpha Day at the Capitol under the current program initiatives through the International Connection Committee in an effort to identify, study and design strategies to enhance the quality of life for citizens in the community with the International Connection Chairman, Attorney Leyser Q. Hayes, a resident and local chapter member in Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, the legislative agenda for Alpha Kappa Alpha Capitol Days throughout the country for 2011, include, but are not limited to, such topics as redistricting, restoration of rights, achieving economic security and health initiatives relating to asthma management and awareness and other health initiatives under the current administration; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend the works, efforts and contributions of such an exemplary organization as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and especially its Southeastern Region:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and commend the members of the Southeastern Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, for the new administration and effective implementation of the new program initiatives under the theme "Global Leadership Through Timeless Service."

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Regional Director, Adrienne P.K. Washington, the International President, Attorney Carolyn House Stewart, and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
