A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION DESIGNATING MARCH 2, 2018, AS "SPEECH AND DEBATE EDUCATION DAY" IN MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, established by the National Speech and Debate Association in conjunction with national and local partners, "Speech and Debate Education Day" serves to promote education of speech and debate in schools throughout Mississippi and to highlight the pivotal roles that speech and debate play in personal advocacy, social movements and public policy; and
WHEREAS, speech and debate education helps students develop important life skills such as communication, critical and analytical thinking, creativity and collaboration through the practice of public speaking, and participants learn to not only analyze and express complex ideas effectively, but also to listen, concur, question or dissent with reason and compassion; and
WHEREAS, because speech and debate skills are an essential component of a well-rounded curriculum, countless educators devote in-school, after-school and weekend time to supporting their students in speech and debate practices and competitions, and the example of hard work and dedication set by these educators provides a lasting and positive impact on their students; and
WHEREAS, National Speech and Debate Education Day will be celebrated across the country on March 2, 2018, and because the skills learned through speech and debate serve students well throughout their lives, this occasion presents a welcomed opportunity to recognize this day in Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby designate March 2, 2018, as "Speech and Debate Education Day" in Mississippi.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the National Speech and Debate Association and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
