House Concurrent Resolution 65
(As Adopted by House and Senate)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE NORTHWEST RANKIN HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER TEAM UPON WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 6A GIRLS SOCCER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, the Northwest Rankin High School Girls "Cougars" Soccer Team finished the 2016-2017 season in grand fashion, defeating Ocean Springs 2-1 in an overtime thriller on February 4, 2017, to take home the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 6A State Championship; and
WHEREAS, although Ocean Springs seemed determined to win the game 1-0, the Cougars never gave up and sent everyone toward the net on a free kick in the final two minutes, scoring the tying goal and sending the match into overtime; and
WHEREAS, it only took five minutes in overtime for Alyssia Davis to score the go-ahead goal to win the game 2-1 and deliver the Cougars their first girls state championship; and
WHEREAS, while winning the state championship is exciting enough, the prospects for the future are even more exciting, as this team is dominated by underclassman who will have a championship under their belt come next year; and
WHEREAS, Northwest Rankin High School dominated the competition this season, with the boys soccer team winning the state championship as well; and
WHEREAS, the Cougar's team statistics were impressive, and there were outstanding headers, strikes, penalty kicks and goals by individual players, but the key to this team's success has been the constant team atmosphere and year-round hard work; and
WHEREAS, the Northwest Rankin Girls Soccer Team is comprised of very talented and distinguished young women, who ultimately catapulted them to winning their first state championship: Sarah Gilliland, GK; Carly Williams, GK, D; Mallory Tapper, D; Anna Kate Wilson, D, MF; Marisa Saunders, MF, FORW, D; Alyssia Davis, FORW; Bella Swan, MF; Holly Trisdale, D; Abbi Russell (C), D, MF; Kelsey Bayles, MF, D; Taylor Collum (C), MF; Olivia Crothers, MF, FORW; Kelby Zendejas, D, FORW; Karson Harper, FORW, MF; Jaelyn Hanson, FORW; Lindsey Stephenson (C), FORW, MF, D; Molly Ford, FORW; Abbi Ashley, MF, FORW; Maddie Faulkner, MF; Malika Verma, FORW, MF; Brooke Hafler, MF, D; Katelyn Williams, MF, FORW; and Courtney Head, D; and
WHEREAS, the Cougars have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Dean Joseph, who has broadened the Cougar's knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend the superb accomplishments of Mississippi's student-athletes, especially those such as the Northwest Rankin High School "Cougars" Girls Soccer Team, whose excellence on and off the field brings honor to their school, their community and the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Northwest Rankin High School Girls Soccer Team upon winning the MHSAA Class 6A State Championship and extend best wishes to the team and coaches for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.
