A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING TERE TURNER OF COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI, FOR BEING NAMED THE 2021 STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR.
WHEREAS, Tere Turner is the 2021 Female Athlete of the Year for the State Games of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Tere Turner hails from Madison, Mississippi, and has won many races despite falls, including gold in the 2018 and 2019 State Games, plus was the champion in her category in the Gulf Coast Regional Mountain Bike series in 2018 and 2019; and
WHEREAS, despite having crashed during the 2021 State Games of Mississippi and broke her arm, the 47-year-old got right back up and completed the race to win silver, showcasing the grit and accomplishment that made her the perfect recipient of the 2021 Female Athlete of the Year honor; and
WHEREAS, State Games Sports Commissioner Grayson Edwards' commentary on Tere was as follows: "Tere does not know the meaning of the word 'quit.' Tere took a tumble off her bike and injured her wrist early in the race, but got up and kept walking the course, determined to finish. Race officials alerted the on-site ambulance crew, but Tere wanted to continue. Her determination to finish despite a difficult challenge earned her this nomination."; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend outstanding Mississippi athletes, especially those such as Tere Turner, who has exceeded all expectations of greatness and brought honor to her hometown of Madison, Mississippi, and to the great Magnolia State:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Tere Turner of Columbus, Mississippi, for being named the 2021 State Games of Mississippi Female Athlete of the Year and express best wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Tere Turner and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
