A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE INTERNATIONAL DANCE COMMISSION AND RECOGNIZING THE OBSERVANCE OF "LITURGICAL DANCE DAY" ON SEPTEMBER 7, 2010, IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, on September 7, 2010, the International Dance Commission will be celebrating "Liturgical Dance Day" as dancers from around the world take part in a day of fasting, prayer and worship; and

WHEREAS, dancing is part of our culture and heritage, providing a means of self-expression through art; and

WHEREAS, as a form of prayer and ministry, liturgical dance unites the body, mind and spirit in visual praise and worship using a variety of dances, which include ballet, tap, jazz, modern dance and hip-hop; and

WHEREAS, liturgical dance can be either spontaneous or choreographed, and is generally fitted to a song's lyrics or to religious concepts; and

WHEREAS, every Sunday morning, liturgical dance is expressed in thousands of ministries across the State of Mississippi, allowing liturgical dance ministries to provide valuable outreach programs to serve inner city youth and instilling them with discipline, the desire to pursue excellence, a love of dance and unique customs from different nations; and

WHEREAS, the International Dance Commission's purpose is to serve as a multicultural umbrella organization and resource pool for dance, worship arts ministries and dance companies throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge the service and contributions of such outgoing organizations as the members of the International Dance Commission who dedicate themselves to service in their communities and sharing their gifts and God-given talents through the creative arts:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the International Dance Commission and its contributions to the creative arts and worship in communities across this state and recognize the observance of "Liturgical Dance Day" on September 7, 2010, in the State of Mississippi.
