A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PICAYUNE HIGH SCHOOL MAROON TIDE FOOTBALL TEAM AND VETERAN HEAD COACH DODD LEE FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2010-2011 SEASON AND FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Picayune High School Maroon Tide Football Team finished the 2010-2011 season with an outstanding 13 victories for the first time ever in the school's football history; and

     WHEREAS, being incredibly well-disciplined young men, the Maroon Tide performed extremely well in the 2010-2011 state playoffs; and

     WHEREAS, on December 2, 2011, the Maroon Tide defeated the Starkville High School Yellow Jackets with a score of 38-21 in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship game at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium before a crowd of 8,500; and

     WHEREAS, in becoming the 2011 Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A Football State Champions, the Picayune High School Football Team had to invest hard work above and beyond the level of other teams, beginning this effort in the late summer months and continuing through early December; and

     WHEREAS, adding to the trophy case, the Maroon Tide has been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Dodd Lee, who in reflecting upon the game said, "I told the team before the game that someone would make history tonight," which the team did in setting a record of 13 wins in one season; and

     WHEREAS, Starkville dominated the third period and overcame a 17-6 half-time deficit while the Maroon Tide dominated the fourth period, pulling out their first State Championship since 1986; and

     WHEREAS, Picayune amassed 459 yards of total offense with 314 rushing yards on 63 carries, running back, Dereonte Magee, had 133 yards on 25 carries, defensive back, Jordan Dedeaux, finished with 88 yards on 12 rushes, and running back, Desmond Taylor, had 75 yards on 13 carries; and

     WHEREAS, in their tireless dedication, the Maroon Tide has developed a winning, cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitudes reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coach, bringing honor to Picayune High School; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Picayune High School Maroon Tide Football Team and veteran Head Coach Dodd Lee for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship and extend best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Dodd, Picayune Principal Kent Kirkland, the Picayune School Board and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
