A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING EVELYN WATKINS FOR BEING NAMED THE 2016 MISSISSIPPI FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AND RECOGNIZING HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE SPORT OF RUNNING.

WHEREAS, in recognition of her determination and dedication to the sport of running, Evelyn Watkins, from Meridian, was honored as the 2016 Mississippi Female Athlete of the Year; and

WHEREAS, the 36-year-old placed first in her age group at the 2016 State Games of Mississippi in the 5K Run, second overall in the female division and seventh overall in the event; and

WHEREAS, having overcome foot surgeries in 2007 that allowed her to run pain free Evelyn began dreaming of running long distance, her first marathon was the St. Jude Memphis Marathon in December 2009, and she has not looked back since; and

WHEREAS, as President of the Bonita Running Club and co-race Director of the Magnolia Marathon, Evelyn always encourages young runners to stick with the sport and helps however she can to ensure they realize their goals; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn has competed in 25 states, and has more than 33 marathons, 18 half-marathons and 150 distance races under her belt, including 10 triathlons and a half-ironman in Chattanooga in 2016; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend the outstanding athletes of our state, such as Evelyn Watkins, whose achievements and dedication to improving the health and wellbeing of our citizens as an ambassador of the sport of running has brought great pride to her family, friends and the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Evelyn Watkins for being honored as the 2016 Mississippi Female Athlete of the Year, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Evelyn Watkins and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
