A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE JACKSON ACADEMY RAIDERS FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH DAVID SYKES UPON A REMARKABLE SEASON AND WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS CLASS AAA DIVISION I STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, in a showdown of titan rivalry, the Jackson Academy Raiders Football Team, defeated three-time defending State Champion, Jackson Prep, on Thursday, November 12, 2009, with a 49-20 victory, winning the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class AAA, Division I Football State Championship before an astonishing crowd of 6,000 fans at Mississippi College's Robinson-Hale Stadium in Clinton, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, finishing the season with the second-best record, 12-1, in school history, winning its first State Championship since 2005 when the Raiders captured the third of three straight state titles, the team also captured the 2009 North Class AAA Division I Championship; and
WHEREAS, this year's championship win catapults the Class AAA No. 1 ranked Jackson Academy Raiders, by The Clarion-Ledger, to its seventh state title and spawns the resurgence and reinvigoration of a spirit of grandeur akin with accomplishing such a remarkable feat; and
WHEREAS, the united effort put forth by the team made the Raiders a formidable force to be reckoned with on the gridiron as evidenced by this accomplishment as well as the honors and recognitions received by several individual players, including: the selection of Will Denny, Payne Kellum, Michael Mordecai, Keith Shumaker, Houston Keyes and Will Marley to the First Team All-Conference; the naming of Travis Williams, Michael Martin, Ross Pickering, Cameron Crockett, Taylor Crasto and Rob Pillow to the Second Team All-Conference; the naming of Will Marley as Jackson Academy's Most Valuable Player; and the tapping of Houston Keyes as the North Class AAA Offensive Player of the Year; and
WHEREAS, the skill and fortitude of several of the team's members were recognized by the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools for selection to the MAIS All-State Team, which competes with teams in Louisiana and Arkansas, including: the selection of Will Denny, Payne Kellum, Houston Keyes, Will Marley and Keith Shumaker to the All-State First Team; and the naming of Cameron Crockett, Keith Shumaker and Travis Williams to the All-State Second Team and the selection of Payne Kellum, Houston Keyes, Will Denny, Cameron Crockett and Will Marley to the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools All-Star Game; and
WHEREAS, the Jackson Academy Raiders have been superbly coached and inspired by first year Head Coach David Sykes, who earned the designated honors of being vetted as 2009 North Class AAA Coach of the Year and 2009 Clarion-Ledger Metro Coach of the Year, and Assistant Coaches Brock Angle, Jason Williams, Brian Madden and John Smith, who worked seamlessly to refine the players' skills in execution; and
WHEREAS, at Jackson Academy, participation in athletics is viewed as an important component in the overall educational experience, as it fosters the development of sportsmanship, camaraderie and physical fitness; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this unique accomplishment by a group of dedicated student athletes and coaches who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Jackson Academy Raiders Football Team and Head Coach David Sykes upon a remarkable season and winning the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) Class AAA Division I State Championship, and extend to the team members, parents and coaches best wishes on this great accomplishment and success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be furnished to Coach Sykes, Jackson Academy Athletic Director Bobby West, Headmaster Pat Taylor, President and CEO Peter Jernberg and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
