A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2013 SIMPSON COUNTY ACADEMY COUGARS FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH WINSTON MULLINS FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Simpson County Academy Cougars Football Team completed an outstanding 13-1 season to win the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) Class 2A Championship Game 20-7 on November 22, 2013, against the Centreville Academy Tigers; and

     WHEREAS, the Cougars demonstrated athletic fortitude and prowess to claim title to their second MAIS Class 2A State Championship in three years, and their sixth overall state championship, also winning in 1973, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2011, with four of those championship teams coached by Headmaster Billy Wayne Hankins and three championship teams with now Head Coach Winston Mullins serving as an assistant coach; and

     WHEREAS, the 2013 Simpson County Academy team's statistics were impressive and there were outstanding performances by individual players, but the key to this team's consistent success is the constant team atmosphere and year-round hard work; and

     WHEREAS, the Cougars have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Winston Mullins, and assistant coaches, Dan Napier, Gird Warren, Justin Sanford, Chaucer Funchess, David Holbrook, Josh Hankins and Amie Green, who have broadened the Cougars' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

     WHEREAS, Coach Mullins continues to build upon the legacy of superior play and true sportsmanship forged by the tenacious and undaunted spirit of each team member, as evidenced in his ability to produce high caliber players and plays, by the team's successful season; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend the achievements of teams of student athletes such as the Simpson County Academy Cougars who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Simpson County Academy Cougars Football Team and Head Coach Winston Mullins for winning the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class 2A State Championship, their second title in three years and sixth all-time title, and extend best wishes to the team and coaches in all of their future academic and athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Winston Mullins, Simpson Academy Headmaster Billy Wayne Hankins and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
