A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING COACH RICKY FORD ON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE NATIONAL JUNIOR COLLEGE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION, (NJCAA) WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME.
WHEREAS, former Northeast Mississippi Community College (NMCC) Booneville, Mississippi, Coach Ricky Ford has been selected to enter the prestigious National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Basketball Hall of Fame for his exceptional on and off the court performance as the Head Coach for the Northeast Mississippi Community College Lady Tigers; and
WHEREAS, a true Mississippian at heart, Coach Ford earned a bachelor's degree from Mississippi State University, Starkville, Mississippi, and a master's degree from the University of Mississippi, Oxford, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Coach Ford coached at Booneville High School before taking over the reins at Northeast Mississippi Community College, stepping it up to the next level and becoming the head coach of the Lady Tigers Basketball Team; and
WHEREAS, upon arriving at NMCC, Coach Ford wasted no time turning the program into a perennial power, with the Tigers earning their first-ever 20-win season in just his second year; and
WHEREAS, during the 1986-1987 season, Coach Ford was named NJCAA Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Tigers to their first national championship, the only perfect season in program history; and
WHEREAS, utilizing his "Built Ford Tough" moniker, Coach Ford is the ninth winningest coach in NJCAA history, finishing his NJCAA coaching career with a 588-226 record in 30 seasons with the Lady Tigers, and having only five losing seasons after taking over in 1981; and
WHEREAS, Coach Ford led the Lady Tigers to 15 Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division Titles, nine MACJC state tournament championships and three NJCAA Region 23 tournament crowns during his illustrious career on the Northeast bench; and
WHEREAS, although Coach Ford stepped away from the hardwood in 2011, he still serves the NMCC community as the institution's executive vice president; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize outstanding coaches such as Coach Ricky Ford who not only coach our Mississippi student athletes so that they may realize their full athletic potential, but also mentor them and positively impact their lives:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Coach Ricky Ford for being selected to enter the National Junior College Athletic Association Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, and extend best wishes to Coach Ricky Ford for continued success in all of his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Ricky Ford, Northeast Mississippi Community College and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
