House Concurrent Resolution 54

(As Adopted by House and Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING NEW YORK GIANTS QUARTERBACK ELISHA NELSON "ELI" MANNING ON BEING SELECTED AS THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER IN SUPER BOWL XLVI.

WHEREAS, Elisha Nelson "Eli" Manning, an athlete with unmatched talent, competed in Super Bowl XLVI on February 5, 2012, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, leading the New York Giants to a thrilling victory over the New England Patriots; and

WHEREAS, the match between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots was the second Super Bowl meeting between quarterbacks Eli Manning and Tom Brady, creating the perfect opportunity for the proud Ole Miss alumnus to seize yet another Super Bowl win from Brady; and

WHEREAS, the 31-year old Manning threw for 296 yards without turning over the ball, leading his Giants to a triumph over the Patriots with a score of 21-17; and

WHEREAS, setting a new record, Manning opened the game by becoming the first quarterback in Super Bowl history to complete his first nine passing attempts; and

WHEREAS, the Giants were behind with a score of 17-15 with three minutes, 46 seconds left when Manning dropped back and threw the perfect ball to receiver Mario Manningham, who managed to catch the ball over his shoulder, his feet tapping the turf just before he went out of bounds; and

WHEREAS, the catch by Manningham was a pivotal moment in the comeback of the Giants, forcing Patriots Coach Bill Belichick to burn a crucial timeout that resulted in the ruling on the field to be affirmed; and

WHEREAS, realizing that a Giants comeback would be inevitable, an anxious and unnerved Belichick told his defense to allow the Giants to score in order to get the ball in the hands of his golden quarterback with plenty of time to put more Patriots points on the scoreboard; and

WHEREAS, Manning watched confidently from the sideline having choreographed an almost flawless game, never appearing as a quarterback under great pressure in the biggest game of the season; and, by contrast, Brady made two critical errors in the game, the first on the Patriot's first play from scrimmage where he allowed the Giants to obtain a safety on an intentional grounding call in the end zone, and the second, on an interception thrown in the last seconds of the game; and

WHEREAS, Brady's attempt to get the ball into the hands of tight end Rob Gronkowski resulted in an interception, and confetti once again fell on Manning and the Giants; and

WHEREAS, in the post-game celebration, Manning was selected as Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XLVI, giving him his second Super Bowl MVP title honor after also winning that award for Super Bowl XLII; and

WHEREAS, an Oxford, Mississippi, resident, Manning is proud of his home community and state, and he has given great time and financial assistance to the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by a role model who resides in this state and starred as quarterback at this state's prestigious college football program, such as Eli Manning, whose prominence on a national level reflects the standout talents of the athletic institute of the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN,  That we do hereby commend and congratulate quarterback Elisha Nelson "Eli" Manning of the New York Giants on being selected as Super Bowl XLVI Most Valuable Player and extend heartfelt best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Eli Manning, the University of Mississippi, the New York Giants and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
